I dun think so, if you are not firing multiple bursts thru the flash at high speed, I dun think it will heat up that badly...

but he's shooting at f16-22, flash output will most prob be at the high side?

that's the way to go, so that you can start spending hours squatting in front of your tank

actually it does, that's why get the canon flash there were several instances of Sigma 500DG users burning their flash heads. They now use 550EX.

mostly there is a minute or so interval between shots so it is not really a problem. but yes one should watch it when firing a few shots in quick succession.

For that budget, maybe a FZ20. Should have some spare to get an external flash. The problem is how to make it work detached from the camera. Those flash with slave function (eg. Emoblitz) may work but you need to pop-up the internal flash, which may cause reflection on the glass, but can be solved by shooting at an angle or cropping.

Basing my recommendation on your budget, not that I have much success shooting fishes in a glass tank.
