Macro lenses

Owned a Tamron SP90 XR Di II before;
tested the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 and 180mm f/3.5 Macro before;
and currently, owning/ using a Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro.:thumbsup:
My opinion- Canoo 100mm given more sharp, more details and more contrast images;
Loving it very much.:heart::heart:

You might also want to consider the Tamron 180mm or the Sigma 150mm both of them comes with lens collar, you will find it very useful on tripod, unless you are hand holding most of the time. both the price is around $1200-1300 could be less expensive than the Canon and furthermore you will have better working distance.

How can you be so sure? Have you tried all of them?

I think the Sigma 105mm Macro and Tamron 90mm Macro are both really great, and very underrated lenses. Both are sharp, have no real flaws, and produce great results.

In addition, the Sigma is built quite well, with the exception of the barrel that extends when focusing. It also has extremely low CA levels.

The Tamron is known to be the sharpest medium long third party macro lens around (that is, before the 105mm Sigma came out and became a rival). It's got a really good reputation.

ya... it's just my preference because i prefer 3rd party brand with similar canon USM... if u have tried the 150mm Sigma and compare with 105mm Sigma... then u will see the different... i like the 90mm tarmon but since now 100mm canon price drop till $800 plus...
why not getting the original since a few hundreds different... save abit more and get it...

I used the Sigma 150 for my macros. IQ and working distance are great. See my clubsnap gallery below for macros taken with this lens.

I use sigma 150mm too. Its autofocusing is very fast and produce very good results. All the pics in my picasa album were shot with the lens.

My heart goes out the Voight 125mm F2.5 Macro, sold all my macro.. only left mpe65 & voigt.
*very underrated, Tack Sharp and superb bokeh on open wide, nice color.
especially when you use it on a full body camera...

EFS-60 marco is definitely the ideal choice for EFS mount camera. Of coz, EF 100 will give u that extra focal length.

got budget go for EFS-60 or EF100
limited budget get the Tamron SP90 or try to look out for EF100 non-USM

Depends what does TS wanna shoot...
for sensitive and skittish subjects, u need a long focal length like Sigma 150 / Tamron 180 / or even Canon 180L... Sigma 180 & Tamron 180 is only a tad more ex than the Canon 100mm and produces decent results.
Im currently using sigma 150, and i find the range not long enough still for shooting macro at times... but it is still a very good lens, and i cant imagine im using a 100mm... even less distance!

I would go for Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro. More working distance when compared to Canon 60mm macro; fast AF; still be able to autofocus with extension tubes on (Canon 60mm can't because it's an EF-S lens); front element does not extend when focusing; and it's a great portrait lens, especially for face closeup in studio shots. :thumbsup:

Yes, it is indeed a very amazing lens. The colour rendition, bokeh and detail reproduction are superb.

i just got a canon 100 macro a few days back. i was debating between this and the sigma 150 macro. i believe they were both in the same price range. i chose the canon because i got a good deal on it 2nd hand.

i saw tests done on the canon 60, 100 and 180 and the bokeh on gets nicer as you go up... but the 180 was way too expensive and it's f3.5 instead of f2.8

here are a couple of test pics i took:

this is the lens + the full set of kenko extension tubes + a 2x tc

quality isnt so great in the last one...but considering i stacked a fullset of extension tubes and a 2x tc....i was surprised

Now that you can get 10 magnification with live view on the 40D, perhaps it's time for an upgrade? That will make a tremendous boost to accuracy of manual focusing. :bsmilie:

I'm not sure about this... I read before.....

If I remember correctly, Canon 100mm f2.8 is a non-extending rotating lens design, while tamron and sigma does extend.....

Yup DOF too thin when shooting macro. Use manual focus. If got $$ get canon 100mm, if not, tamron 90mm
