M7 or MP ??

Hi

Would be interested to obtain views of users/owners of these cameras. If you are to chose only one, which would you pick and why ?


One other query - is it cheaper to buy in HK? i know there is currently the Summarit offer where you get to pick one of the Summarit lens (35, 50, 75 or 90) FOC together with the purchase of body. I beleive the M7 & MP are selling at just above $6k? (incld the Summarit lens).

I'll go with MP cos fully mechanical-can work without battery. M7 needs battery-without batt, I think only 2 shutter speed workable.

MP- I love the way the camera forces me to think about my photography. And it's just so smooth and mechanically "perfect." If i had to start over as a pro wedding photog, i'd just want to shoot nothing but MPs.

I am not a body expert lah! I just like bodies.

I am still using both.

It really depends on what you usually shoot. For people or moving objects, I tend to go for M7 due to the aperture priority function.

Take note though, I am starting to get very lazy and hence keep taking the M7 on holidays. I also use my kid as a model a lot, so M7 helps in many ways. Put the ISO setting on DX and you won't have to worry about forgetting to adjust the dial on the MP.

The aperture priority in my opinion is super accurate given the latitude of film. I find a good hit rate on the M7 metering than the M8. Perhaps its cos there were adjustments made while Konata develops the prints.

I sold my MP once and after 6 months bought another. I missed it because there's usually a subconscious 'think before you shoot' mentality that persists while using the MP. This way, you actually hone your skills as a photographer.

Cosmetics wise, the MP is slick, it doesn't have TTL (I always wonder why we need TTL in M) and therefore the top portion of the body doesn't have an extra few millimeters like the M7 or M6TTL. A chrome M7 looks bloated against a chrome MP. The engraving on the MP looks good too.

Sure, the M6 Classic may be just like the current MP but the mechanisms of the MP I think have been upgraded...there's the tighter shutter wind and the non flare VF (anyone can add to this point?).

Either way, you won't lose with the M7 or MP. They are both great cameras to use for a long time. I don't think a mechanical or electrical shutter makes a difference to me in terms of reliability. I dropped my M7 from waist level before and it still works fine. Maybe I am just super lucky.

The next question now for you is: Chrome or Black!

appreciate your comments which seem to be along the lines of my impression ....... the MP as a pure mechanical tool (that maybe forces you to pause for a moment before snapping) and the M7 as a more practical/faster tool for the lazy photog (like me!)

any of you have any experience with the Summarit lens?

I think better buy local especially for camera in case you may have any issue with warranty. But then it's a Leica...it's built to last

Well, you can write to Dr Yao. But I think prices all over are pretty steep when 'NEW' is concerned.

I also wouldn't go for the Summarit lenses. Afterall, you'll still want faster lenses eventually. Everyone is after the 'wide open' essence of Leica lenses.....

Take your time to hunt. I didn't believe it at first, but a wise old man told me to start with a 50mm. Soon after, I bought a 35mm. But in the end, I use the 50mm more. Metering with the 50mm is almost spot. So you will get nicely exposed portraits especially.
