Hi Fellas,

Interested in getting a M3 or a M6 but feel like trying them out or at least molest them for a bit.

Anyone has any recommendation on which shop in Singapore is reliable and friendly enough for me to do so?

Thanks!

Cheers,
Larry

Hi Fellas,

Hmm

2 different cams.

Get the M6 if what you are looking for is value for $$

If you will shoot mainly 50mm focal length and dont mind the lack of a meter, the M3 is the choice.
If you intend to shoot wider (lets say 35mm), you would have to get an external viewfinder unless you 'agar-ration' the field of view.

Shucks guys, I'm based overseas and will only be back next week for a few days. So can't join the outing. Thanks for the invite!

Hmm... so M3 does not provide for 35mm field of view?

Is there a reputable shop in SIN for leica?

:)

for 2nd hand sets, benphoto. google it. (cityhall mrt station, come out turn left). its just at opp. peninsula plaza, beside excelsior beside funan it mall. cant remember the building name though.. also named excelsior? haha

nt sure if anyone else has any other recommendations for 2nd hand sets. but benphoto do have quite a selection of 2nd hand M cameras

m3 = 50,90,135 mm framelines. it is very suited for 50mm i guess since the magnification is quite high. personally nv tried before haha..

Ben photo will let you try. Take the m3 if you want to use 50s :) m6 is a good all rounder

benphoto over at peninsula has loads of Ms... just dunno how long they will stay in the cabinet! the leica stuff in benphoto seems to move pretty fast.... :bsmilie:

as of this afternoon when i was walking ard hunting for a 90mm, they have like 3 rows worth in the glass cabinet. so, check it out!

I think if he were to join the rf.sg outing,he'll end up getting a diff camera...hahahaha

dont mind if i ask...does 50mm frameline in m6 x0.85 viewfinder offer just as good a view?potential m6 user as well :)

I'm a 35mm guy... probably might even go 28mm in future, so I guess M3 is out? Heard too much about the large viewfinder la, which is why I'm considering it.

Btw, if you buy from Benphoto, would the set already gone through CLA?

if i remember, there's some shop warranty. but no... i don't think there's CLA. if you need CLA, can always drop a PM to chiif. he's our resident "all things RF". ;)

If you are 35mm fan, you still can use M3 any of 3 ways:-

1. Get a 35mm cron with goggles
2. Attach an external VF. Focus with the internal VF and compose with external VF (a la Leica III series)
3. Use the internal VF and just estimate. 35mm is not much wider than 50mm. With RF you will read that most people compose "inside their head", not inside the VF.

M3 is better built than M6.

M3 has no meter. You either use external meter, or Sunny16. If you are shooting BW film, the lack of meter is not big problem coz BW film is quite error tolerant. You sunny16 guessing can be wrong by about 2 stops and your image is still fine. Metering accuracy is more impt for color film.

M6 is easier to find a good piece. M3 is alot older, and copies in circulation are likely to require CLA. Test thoroughly before purchase.

0.85 is good for 50mm, but still smaller than the 0.91 of M3.

M3's 0.91 VF magnification is the best that leica offers for 50mm. To get a better VF for 50mm, you want to try the CV Bessa 3 series which is 1:1 ratio (you can focus with both eyes open, amazing effect).

ultimately the choice is simple. It depends if you are 35mm or 50mm person.

If you shoot only 50mm, then get M3 (0.91) or another M that is 0.85.

If you shoot both 35mm and 50mm, then get a regular 0.72

(or.....if you want to be spoilt by the biggest, brightest VF such that you cannot return to Leica M cameras, try the Zeiss Ikon!)

I personally own a M3 (DS) and a light meter for the iphone; can be downloaded for free off app store.
Chiif recommended the above and it works perfectly fine.
M3 Viewfinder suits me just fine; for one who wears spec.
On my M8, i had to use a diopter/magnifier to reach an M3 equivalent.
End of day, its individual preference.
You have to play with it.

All things technical aside, the nostalgia and 'kick' of an M3 or M2 has a devastating effect.

For me, M3 works very well with 50mm & 90mm, but for 28mm a M6TTL 0.58 mag is fantastic!!

Thanks for shedding some light on the situaion....guess there's an M for everyone :)

like what most bros have advised, there's an M for everyone..

don't get hung up over choices, just go with your gut/heart and pick one which meets your needs/budget..

there's a reason why most of us own more than one M.. ;):embrass:

I used to think theres a leica for everyone. So i started to buy and buy. After awhile i realised i was buying leicas more than using them. Too heart pain to use, so always keep in dry cabinet.

I started shooting alot more after i got Zeiss Ikon. The ZI is not so collectible, i do not feel heart pain using it, so i shoot more with it.

Morale of story: dun buy too expensive gear coz you wont use them!
