M-Mount lenses on Lumix G1

Blurry/smearing corners probably are less visible at f4 and reduced size, but obvious wide open & full size, methink.

Spend your own money and do your own tests if other people's sample pictures doesn't satisfy you. That's what I did. ;)

Actually, if you print you photos, it doesn't matter at all unless the focused subject smears, the OOF background or foreground... it doesn't matter to me.

Sean Reid tested a Leica 28mm summicron (a $4k+ lens known to perform superbly on any M cameras) on a G1 and found that there are obvious smearing at the edges of picture. While Sean is regarded as an expert, I reckon that he might have a lemon summicron or a faulty G1. However, there are many other people experience the same problem, mostly with wide angle lens shot wide open (or close to the max aperture). That is annoying.

G1 is great if you like those short tele effect. To get even a normal FOV (say effective 50mm f2), you would need a 25mmf2 lens, not easy (nor cheap) to find such a lens. Before paying for such an expensive wide angle lens, I am hoping to see some real life users' experience (from those who are willing to share, of course) and draw my own conclusion.

Personally, I have tested a few Leica 28mm f2.8 lenses. So far the least smearing one is Leica Elmarit 28mm v3. The 28mm f2.8 ASPH smears very badly. I will try those LTM canon 28mm lenses. Not keen with the CV ones tho.

At the end of the day, I tend to think that Sean is most likely correct. For some strange reasons, G1 produces smearly edges esp. for WA lenses. From 35mm & up, it is less obvious, but still there if you look for it.:dunno:

All this is good only if you like to look at images 100% crop at the edges and all the time etc.. but if you print the photos in 4R even 8R, what really matters is the subject is in sharp focus and colour rendition the lens produce. I am not for or against any camera or lenses, I think when we try to be too technical... we loose out on the things that would truly make us enjoy this hobby.

Understand your view, but the "perfectionist/purist" in some of us see otherwise (for similar reason, we see many who got CV lenses switching to Leica glass, eventually.)

Anyway, I've got a feeling that after reading this thread, many G1 users will now look at their image corners at full size (actually even 50% is clear enough)! For that, I apologize.

That is usually the case. :sweatsm:

No need to apologize for stating the fact, thanks for highlighting actually.

How about sharing your test pix with us by posting them here?

I would rather not to bore people with pix that have 'no artistic merit' and further more, 28mm is hardly wide angle on the G1. ;)

Ah... if only I could win that Carl Zeiss Distagon 16mm f2 lens from theBay tonight...

Happy measurebating with your Leica lenses then. :bsmilie:

one of the interesting aspects of RF is the availability of russian optics... anyone has any samples on jupiters etc... with the G1? terima kaseh

Any 1 try it on C/Y mount, how good is it.

Get bored with those "short tele" on G1 after a while. Finally found a "normal" lens:

This xenon lens is superb. It produces image with great sharpness and contrast in most parts of the field. Slight dark edges and softness are visible at widest aperture.
Below is a test shot. Almost no distortion.

Got it from the Bay :P
