LX5 vs S95 High ISO Pics

Hi, I prefer LX5 because it has a larger than average sensor 1/1.63 inch, f3.3 at maximum telephoto, power ois is 2x effective as mega ois, deeper photodiode to store more charge,
microlens with double element structure and f2.8 to f2.0 means ISO 800 to ISO 1600.

I just got hold of the LX-5. I feel that apart from what is already mentioned, even the looks of the lx-5 is more professional with a better grip as compared to the canon.

hi can i ask which is better S95 or LX5 if I was primarily using AUTO mode all the time? Thanks

With regards to the question, it's similar to is NUS or SMU better for university education? Would you discriminate another brand just to emphasize your brand's competitive advantage?

I'd say each brand has its advantage. Both cameras are good to go to shoot with auto, in fact. One man's meat, another man's poison. That's why there is a choice for consumers to choose =)

The S95 has its appeal to consumers who want a more consumer feel and size, while the LX5 is appealing to consumers who like a grip, as well the look and feel. In terms of capabilties, both are very decent cameras which normal consumers won't be able to tell the differences. There are reasons why professionals go with either, which is to have a really decent compact to go together with their DSLR.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is to enjoy the photography, rather than pixel peeking and trying to compare between the two very decent cameras. Under most situations from pubbing to parties, from outdoor to street, the two cameras will fulfill your needs

Would having a good camera make you a good photographer? Would a good eye for photography be spoilt just because you have a camera which can only be shot on auto?

aGREE W u Zan82, throw de cam at someone might produce different results...a canon or a LX really depends on ur preference, for that slight difference in the IQ or even the functionality of the camera, u wont become a better photographer becos of that....

Hi, yip, I think LX5 gives more fun and enjoyment than S95, though LX5 can't be put in shirt
pocket. S95 can and be useful for fast action withdrawal and shooting.

I was equally undecided about which one to buy.
I finally decided for the S95. It is so much smaller than the LX5, so the chances to bring it out are much higher.
The non-zoom during Video is not much of a problem for me. Not zooming makes it a lot easier to watch the final video.

So for me, the criteria is simply: Size matters, so S95.

On a side note, I also prefer the menu of Canon. I looked at the LX5, and it is basically a long list of entries without structure. This may become a problem when you need to adjust settings while shooting.

I like both cameras but I bought S95 in the end because it is cheaper, smaller, never own a Canon camera before and most importantly it dun have the external lens-cover which I find damn troublesome. IQ-wise, it should be almost equal between the 2.

agree with aaron.

I have the lx3 looking at upgrading but can't find anything worthwhile - the s95 breaks ground in the formfactor i.e smaller, more compact and more portable. the s95 will get more shots overall due to its portability.

differences in image quality is quickly negated by poor monitors and cheap inks/paper or small printing size.

true. if the LX5 can zoom to 105mm instead of 90mm then it would only be about a stop difference. All that is left now is to check the IQ of the LX5.

The LX5 goes up to 120mm if you set the i-Zoom on in the setup. At 120mm the aperture still remain at f3.3 without any loss of resolution.

Discovered this wonderful feature when I got my Dlux5 just.

Hope this would put a smile on all owner's face.

FYI

The LX5 has a couple of additional zoom modes which help extend its base 3.8x optical zoom. The i.Zoom option is more suitable when retaining quality is important as it essentially crops the image from the sensor which actually has 11.3 effective Megapixels. Digital Zoom is obviously the worse choice. Either way, these can be equally achieved in a photo editor from an original 10 Megapixel image. Note that the LX5 only does i.Zoom till 3 Megapixel. The 2 and 0.3 Megapixel options do not allow for further zooming past 35.7x. When recording video, the zoom levels are limited to those available for 10 Megapixel stills.

i had used lx3, preferred S90. Now back to lX5, prefer it to s90.
