LX1 Rocks!!!

Some people said that there is probably no difference in the lens and firmware between the LX1 and D-Lux 2 this time and that's why the price difference is so little between the two unlike the LC1 and the Digilux 2.

There is a slight difference in the firmware though that is very much noticeable.... when the camera is started up, the red dot Leica logo appears first to announce to the world that this is a 'Leica'.

I have only just test fired a few shots but it seems to my eyes that the image quality of the LC1 is better than that of the D-Lux 2 / LX1. Maybe it is because of the Summicron lens of the LC1. But I do like the perspective-like effect of shooting at wide angles in the 16:9 mode. It looks totally different from simply cropping a 4:3 or 3:2 format image to 16:9 format.

Please give us an update on how the Lx1/D-lux2 perform in low light conditions after you have tested it. Really like the LX1 but very stressed when I see the noise on some images on the net. Its like paying twice the price yet you get the image quality of an Fx9. How to justify the price can someone explain?

Some say the Leica has a slightly different lens coating and software while some say it is the same as the LX1.

Nevertheless, the $300 is worth it for the Leica name plus the additional year of warrranty, the bag and Adobe software.

Does anyone know whether I can develop 16:9 photos at photo developing shops ? Would the shop charge extra for it ?

Can. Last time APS camera like Canon IXUS APS already has 16:9 format. I used to have 1. I remember i used to develop at $1.20 a piece.

Pop, usually the first thing I do with a new camera is to put it thru its paces. Things like

• Shooting at all the ISOs of the same object (I usually choose a human form statue)
• Shoot with tripod and without again of the same subject
• Try out the apperture settings
• Do day and night shoots
• With the LX1, try out the different aspect ratios

By then, I'd have a good feel of what the camera can do, and what situation it struggles, and also which situations to avoid. This is so that I'd roughly know what to do and not "karang Kaboh" when a photo opportunity comes up.

General guidelines for framing, rules of thirds, Depth of field, etc comes into play when you take pictures. Then there are the common mistakes to avoid.

Everyone has their own "style" so what works for one may not work for another. How a picture comes out also largely depends on your "view of the world" and your mood at the particular moment you snap the picture.

If you're still hunting for your own "style", what I did was to take a good look at the postcards, and then try to recapture the same shot myself. After a while, you'll start think "Why he/she take this angle, isn't that other angle better?"... this is when you start to develop your own personal style.

Yes but this model of Crumpler costs only S$20+ at CP and Challenger leh. Just because of the red dot embroidered onto the case, the price rose to US$49.95. Maybe it is also because it is covered by the standard Leica 2 yr warranty.

  Thank you so much, Ben. You know, your advice is so simple yet it never occured to me. They are so good for getting started with what different settings of the camera mean. Sometimes being a newbie, you just don't know where to begin with and your advice has just pointed the direction for me. Just what I need.
  
  I have decided on getting a FX9 primarily because I really just want a cam that will fit nicely in my pocket. Will definitely heed your words of wisdom and play with the various settings, probably not much though since FX9 is very much P&S.

If there has been a drop of price since the launch of LX 1 and after the release of LX 2 in the market, could anyone out there give the pricing ?

Thank you so much for the information in advance, I am thinking of getting this power packed camera which is so small but has the function and power which almost rival any prosumer digicam in the market.Currently, I own Sony DSC F828 which has let me down, it is too big and the colour aberation (PF ) is terrible.What makes me even more seeth with anger is that it is almost falling into pieces despite having own for about 14mths - don't know why but the almost all the screws seems to unscrew by itself. Could it be due to expansion and contraction of the metals?

There is no LX2.
You must have mistaken the Leica D-Lux 2 for it.
The Leica D-Lux 2 is the more expensive verison of the Panasonic LX-1.

Right. Thank u so much for your correction. I am a bit disappointed though - the price will not drop for sometime then. M willing to wait,till then I have to hang onto my stupid Sony (F828) which makes it almost impossible to take photos without any purple fringe.

No problem. The LX-1 is not a perfect camera. You may not like the noise and the performance in low light. I'm actually surprised that you have so much problems with the F828. I would have thought it is quite a good camera.

It was all right back in Singapore but once I started shooting here in UK, I began to get all the problem like purple fringe, missing screws, taking to much to read my microdrive and CF card and etc. I am stuck with this junk for now as I am not sure if I should bring along this camera with me for photo during my trips to Europe as there is gap on the portion of the camera where the screw came off. Searched almost all the shops for the screw but none had it. I contacted Sony and was given a website for the company that deals with thier spare part and on this site I searched for the screw but there is none. I am really pissed off now.

No more Sony for me !!!! This F828 will be the last one, no more Sony, really.

I think if ur 828 still under warranty better send in, no camera would have such bad purple fringing... probably some wrong with the ccd...

Definitely something faulty with the F828. You should send it in for servicing. Don't think that this could be resolved by replacing the screws.

Looks like a faulty CCD you got there. Sony recently recalled a number of cameras with CCD defects. Suggest you check if the F828 is covered.
