Lumix FZ200 - Cheaper alternative to Sony FS700 ?

In the same way a taxi ride is a cheaper alternative to buying a car? :p Seriously though, you're comparing a fixed lens compact with something in an entirely different league. Depends on what got you looking at a FS700 for in the first place.

LOL....

How do you even start comparing...?

Maybe is a typo ?

Maybe TS is comparing the Panasonic FZ200 with Sony RX10 which is also cannot change lens ?

Just a thought only.

I was just thinking about the 120fps and the pricings only. Comparing $688 to $10,000.

Sorry. Poor topic starter. :(

Rodney from BambooPictures recommended me the HDR-660EV. I got it for the slow mo.

Love it at SGD 1488

Some slow mo samples to share:

No worries, not that it was a "poor topic starter", but it was lacking context as we didn't know what you were thinking or looking at. If you'd put that in your opening post (that you were looking at HFR (high frame rate)), would have given us some context for discussion :)

FYI, if you're purely looking at 720p/120fps, other contenders are the Panasonic Lumix ZS30(TZ40), LX7, GoPro Hero3, Sony Action Cam (HDR-AS15/30V), and the iPhone 5S.

indeed the iPhone 5S is fabulous for slow-mo at 120fps.. I have it and I'm loving experimenting with it!

Thanks Seniors for your kind understanding.

JacePhoto>>> Yupz, Rodney did recommend the same one to me as well.

Kadinsky>>> Thanks for sharing other models. I would take look at them as well.

Deunamist>>> Seen some beautiful slow mo with the iPhone5S.

Hi Jace, this is slow down by how many % ?

40% ?

Thanks

Jace, your shots are amazingly steady for handheld! Great video. But don't get your camera wet! haha.

Just bought one for myself. I would say it was impulsive purchase. Kekekekekek.

First Look
- Could not agree more with hamanoshun. Where can compare to Sony FS700 !! What was I thinking.
- FZ200 is similar to my Canon G10.
- The body feels cheap compared to G10. First thing in my mind, confirm this body could not take the paintballs hits like my Canon 60D.
- I would say this would be my holiday camera. No more 60D.

Photography
- I am not a photographer. I would say taking pictures is quite easy. With its constant F2.8, the photos looks amazing.
- I am impressed with 600mm zoom.

Videography
- I am more interested in this section. I have yet to test it out. One thing for sure, if want to shoot at high speed recording indoor, you need a lot of lightings and properly lit. If not, the noise captured is irritating.

Lastly,
- Like I mentioned, it was impulsive purchase so whatever cons with it that I might encounter later, I have to expand the cons/limitations.
- After 30 minutes of playing with it, I realized that I cannot shoot at 120fps. Only 100fps. Called the shop informed about it. The shop told me I bought the SEA set not the US set. If I want the US set, I need to place an order or purchase direct from BHP. Alamak!
- Will upload the test photos tonight.

My slow mo video testing.

Edited on 30fps sequence. Increase the speed for the original footages 170% as to reflect the actual video recording speed on camera. No color correction or grading is done.

The slowest slow mo at its speed will be around 5-10%. Did not use twixtor.

Not good for indoor slow mo video shoot. Motion blur is pretty bad.

BambooPictures>>> Lumix FZ200. All I can say for now, the results for High Speed Recording is best for outdoor and not indoor. The setback is that, all the settings are lock in High Speed Recording. Can't manually adjust the ISO and Shutter speed. The fan slow mo was terrible! If only Canon G16 can shoot 120fps, that will be great.

Hi Ryan,

Its auto feature. But i think its a 3 sec recording that churns out a 10 sec clip. So if my maths is correct, its a 33.3% slow down? haha

Took another round for slow motion testings.

This time, I shoot in broad daylight. This confirms that FZ200 shoots best at outdoor and with good lighting. Low lighting, night shoot and indoor sucks big time.

This time around I edited with twixtor pro and basic color correction and grading.

- Color correction/grading
It is very limited and has lesser dynamic range for you to play around. And if you try to add more editing layers, the moire will be highlighted.

- ISO
FZ200 the max ISO that you can use under low lighting is ISO800. Anything greater, nothing is usable for me. The last few clips, I shot at ISO6400(max). You can pretty see the noise and purple pixels very clearly.

Overall, this could be a product that falls in my category of "Cheap and Good". Yes, it does come with its limitations. I need to expand and explore on how best to work with the limitations.

Photo-taking wise, can't say much as I am not into photography. It is easy to use and shoot photo with it. 600m zoom, wow! The photos I took is pretty good. To my untrained photography eyes.

JacePhoto and Ryan>>> I was told Sony camcorders that are below $2000 series can shoot slow mo for 3 seconds. It will be shot at 240fps. What you are getting is a playback at 24fps.

Read that there's some confusion over that:

Some of the models in the Handycam lineup from Sony such as the HDR-CX110 (ebay link) have a feature Sony dubbed “Smooth Slow Record”. From the documentation this feature purports to take 3 seconds of video and extend it to 12 seconds at 240fps. Not surprising many consumers are baffled when the video that comes out of the camera is a 12 second clip at 30fps (actual 29.97fps). The difference being 240fps * 3 seconds=720 frames vs. 12 seconds * 30fps = 360 frames. So does it record at 240fps or 120fps?

The answer is a bit of both and the confusion is actually a typo in Sony’s documentation. The video is recorded at 240 fields per second. The file that’s generated by the camera is 120 frames per second. In interlaced video there are 2 fields to every frame.
