Luck or Art?

Whether it's luck or art, the photographer first have to take out the camera out and shoot and document Life. Most great photographers became great just because they spend their entire life just doing that and they became good and then great.

Since this is such a broad topic for discussion, I OT a little, sharing this article my good friend sent me this afternoon...

There's a link at the bottom of the article to a Flickr page with 511 photos on the Korean War...

It's too much for me...

I once aspired to be a war photographer, like Robert Capa. But realized I am chicken heart in nature... better to be a photographic equipment dealer instead... :bsmilie:

i see blood my legs will go soft.. So can forget it

your lack of attention to detail is appalling.

at a quick glance, i can tell you why the top photo is far superior to the bottom. expression, timing, angle, all these beat the bottom photo hands down, that is why winogrand is winogrand, and unknown photographer is unknown photographer.

Expanding on night86mare's

The difference also in the meaning of the picture. Winogrand's pic is "a social commentary of his time" I "" cos so many have said it is so.
I think it is because of
Solem expression - conveys serious content
Monkeys dress in clothes and the all - signal of extravagance
so a its a comment or document of a certain cross-section of society : rich black white couple.

Winogrand's ability to do this is both passive and active. Its not a fluke because he keeps doing it over and over again! if you take pictures long enough esp of "boring" "mundane" subject these hidden elements will surface soon enough. (the psychology if this is beyond me nor is it importan at this moment)

Due to design of the picture the second one doesn't provoke the same imagery. At best,
its a good picture which express a universal content that is fun on daily life with intersting subject matter but thats all. In a way the interesting subject matter killed the picture.

second pic is by Tod Papageorge if i saw the link properly. He is very good as well.
which bring to the point that skill photographers makes good pictures but experience and lots of practice makes master pieces.

On luck: seriously winogrand must be bloody lucky to make enough great pictures to publish , public relations, the animals and more (only saw those 2 books =P ). Another reason I know they are good is because I photographed in similar situations he has and honestly nowhere as good as his. So he is more than just lucky.

On Art: I am not sure what is art or not given what is called art nowadays nor bother about it maybe that makes me an artist =P

if anyone soley depend on luck to get good photos, you either need to be very very lucky or you need to wait a 1000 years to get a good photo. The picture of the couple adopting chimps was taken because the photographer did some research and knew there was the adoption event at the zoo. Yes you need to read a lot to be a good street photographer.
