LTM or M-mount on m4/3

My observation: for M lenses, standard and tele generally work fine on m4/3. 28mm or shorter, you start to see significant drop in image quality, esp. at the edges. (35mm is probably at the border line.) Most WA RF lenses show "smear" image at corners. One good example is the ZM 25mm. Great WA lens on films, but performs poorly on m43. Likewise for Leica 28mm f2 and f2.8 ASPH. [These WA lenses work just fine on digital M though. I believe this has something to do with the different sensors' orientation of these two systems.]

So, m43 is great for short tele, no so for standard nor WA. (One would need a great 25mm f1 lens to get an equivalent 50mm f2 lens on m43, so even the super-expensive Leica 24mm/1.4 summilux is not enough.)

My experience is quality is already not so great at 50mm. Pictures appear quite soft. The same lens is ok when used on my MP or M9.

If the kindle is placed near the L or R margin (the last 1/3 portion of the frame), the IQ degradation would be quite obvious.

Of the few Leica 50mm lenses which I tested on m43, I found that:

1. summilux - v1, v2, v3 and ASPH, all CMI. centre sharpness though reduced, but still acceptable. edges all show smearing. ASPH being the worse.
Stopping down even to f5.6 also doesn't help very much.

2. summicron - rigid, DR, and last version. slightly soften. more so at the edges. Overall better performance than the lux.

Similar story for 35mm cron and lux. The winner turns out to be the humble summaron 35/3.5. I really don't know why.

[BTW, in terms of IQ, I would go as far as saying that the (software-assisted) Lumix 20/1.7 AF lens eats ALL the above Leica lenses for lunch on the m43 cameras.]

This is actually quite an old problem. GetDPI Forum has an interesting discussion about the M-lens issues on m43 nearly a year ago:

Sean Reid's observations on M mount lenses on the G1

While the discussions are enthu and subjective, I found the ppl there open-minded and friendly.

Enjoy reading it.

Cheers,

Wha! you called my wife auntie, i will be killed if i do that. lucky she is not reading this

have anyone tried using LTM or M mount lens on Lumix GF1?
heard that the results of it isn't as good as using it on manual camera itself.
what is your view on it?

Maybe it depends on how you want to use it. The crop factor needs getting used to. Here are some shots taken by my wife with her new 50mm f1.1 (M mount) on a GF1.

I was contemplating getting the nokton 50mm f1.1 for my GF1...

Do you guys use the viewfinder or the live view when focusing?

Nice! Thought the 50/f1.1 would only perform well on full frame... never knew on hands of a good photographer, it could produce such results!:thumbsup::thumbsup:
