not trying to be anal, but maybe refrain from posting your own pics in critique corner thread. that said, moderation in CC has been relatively lax, i wonder where eikin is.. probably busy with life.

threadstarter - yes, i was going to say that a more squarish format crop will be better - 4:3 seems to work here if you have used that in the second cropped version. if you have the time and leisure and photoshop know-how, can consider smoothing out the sky, it will make the picture more "perfect".. if that is your preference. cheers!

with regards to posting photos in the critique corner, are you saying that i cant post additional edited pictures (like in this post)? hmm not very sure but did i just violated the 1 photo per week rule? if so what will u recommend me doing if i am to post additional edited photos as like what happened in this thread?

Thanks for viewing!! to me i think composition is the most important aspect of photography, which unfortunately, is the weakest link in my case. So right now i'm trying to practise composing my photos cuz i realised im spending a lot of time PSing photos cropping photos after taking them. ha..

hmm i think wat night86mare said refers to a general case, when composition is off, you have to resort to extreme PSing or cropping to rectify it, and in most cases these steps cant even make the photo a nice one which carries the intended feeling. this is what i realised cuz a lot of my photos didnt turn out very nice due to poor composition =)

I think i have been misunderstood. I also cropped my pics whenever my composition is off. I am just voicing an opinion that different ways of cropping of the pic will affect the message transmitted to the viewer. Hope that clarifies.

Absolutely.

That said, at the end of the day, as long as we all realise that there is no way cropping for ideal composition can beat composing ideally at the time of shooting, and strive towards achieving that, then we all learn and improve.

Nowadays, I seldom find the need to crop, after practicing composition until it feels like second nature to me.

hrm. i think working on the original picture based on comments is encouraged, rather than abhorred.

i amde the statement because an individual - cannot remember who.. happily posted his heart picture here or something like that. he has removed it though.

though essentially for certain scenes where the elements aren't exactly static and movement and adjustment of viewpoint/perspective does not add the problem of having too much space on one side, etc.. then cropping after the fact, or shooting with the crop in mind is unavoidable. i find 3:2 (the normal out of camera output) a little too long sometimes for my liking.. :bsmilie:

It really depends on your composition and preferences.

i find it would be better if say cut out the distracting structures on the bottom right and in its place a couple backs in silhouette lookin up would better convey the feeling.

There is a very simple way to fix the first itteration of your pic. In photoshop just PS out the highlighted screens on the buildings in the foreground. Make them black. The colours are beautiful and once you remove thost rectangles of light the image will really pop!

the sky was not so striking at first. i brought up the saturation and luminance in PS. =)

somehow im attracted to the orange sky.. ha though i have to agree with u that it might appear too saturated =)

Yea, I know how the whole work thing clashes with photoshopping...I have a bit of trouble not playing around in that program!
I edited the pic a little for you so you can see what I mean (if you want me to take it down just let me know). The way I did this (the lazy way) was to duplicate the background layer and cut out the sections I wanted to black out from that layer. I then colour overlayed them to match the ambient black of the rest of the image. After that I went in with the eraser tool (set to a very low flow setting ~10%) and just softened up the edges a little so that the squarish bits "melt" back into the image. Anyways mate, I hope this helps you! Really beautiful picture!

Just an afterthought - have you tried a square crop?
