To all prospective candidates,

Thank you for expressing your interest. I am looking for fashion photographers at $20-$30 per hour for my new fashion online store and it will be hosted in indoor photography setting (most probably will last 2.5-3 hours). Studios will be booked so photographer will only require to bring along your DSLR. Rates will increase subsequently as I am in the process of launching my online store but I am looking at long-term collaboration with the prospective photographer. Model hired for the campaign shoot will be caucasian/pan asian. It will be a great opportunity for you to build your portfolio.

For interested photographers, please send your portfolio (min. 7 photos) or your online portfolio to maleficientstyle@gmail.com and indicate your work experiences, tentative days that you will be available for hire and the camera model that you will be using for the photoshoot. Thank you once again.

wow fashion photographer for $20-$30!

then ang moh model probably gets $100?

so having the studio booked, having ang moh model and a guy with a dslr will have a good fashion picture already i guess, since he's paid $20-$30

mind you, it should be good for your portfolio since you get to shoot ang moh

but wait... you need to have 7 photos in your portfolio to apply, i assume it needs to be good fashion photos to apply for a $20-$30 fashion photographer

all the best to the $20-$30 fashion photographer!

at least you get to shoot ang moh, i so envy you!

i cant apply i'm not a fashion photographer

Any full frame DSLR and lens cost money.

Photographer time cost money.

Cheap things don't come good and good things don;t come cheap...

White or Asian does not matter, you pay for good work, don't pay for cheap uncreative sloppy jobs....

By the sound, the ads is looking for a newbie, might need someone with a semi pro DSLR crop format...

Nikon And Canon are selling cut throat price for their DSLR and lens, frigging pirates.....

And here we have another ******* killing market for the rest of us legit photogs

Think of it this way. Shot unknown looking supposed to be pan asian, get paid money some more not have to pay money, sure win win one. Why not, he never specified have to do retouching just wanted a shooter.......

TS request doesn't seem unreasonable to me. The ocean has plenty of room for big and little fish no???

TS is a little fish in big ocean right now...maybe someday he can grow big.

Note this part of what he said please... :)

"Rates will increase subsequently as I am in the process of launching..."

Sounds like a sound approach to business to me. Maybe could be a ground floor opportunity for both TS and prospective photographer to develop work and make more money.

Is it just him or EVERY other scrimpy client giving us the same excuse.

We're looking at long term partnership

You can use it for your portfolio

It will be a great chance to meet a lot of my friends who are also interested in getting a photographer/getting married/blabla

It will be good exposure

It's a simply event

Its a small event

Please don't insult us professionals who do this for a living by saying it's genuine. Because if it really is genuine then you should know you get what you pay for.

Alexcheng... I understand how you can find this job to be an insult to you as a professional photographer. But I don't think this request was targeted at a high end service provider as yourself. You could reconsider your reaction.

However, dissing the client just because the price offered is lower than what you normally accept is rather unprofessional.

I understand your stand on this, however you do realise the long term repercussions of this right? That it will eventually dissolve the market for the rest of us who actually do good work. At this price range it is not even acceptable unless you are expecting interns to do the actual shooting. Professionalism is one thing, but when you are trying to sell a living, and then a hobbyist comes along and does what you can do for a fraction because he probably ALREADY makes his means somewhere else, it's called undercutting.

Maybe you dont agree with my response or that it's futile. I get it, but people who come here and anyhow whack the prices under the guise of 'small event', 'simple shoot', 'good exposure' are usually people who KNOW that there will always be amateurs who are willing to earn pocket money for photography. And this has to stop. I personally dont get any business from here. But i speak for the some of us who do, because like it or not bro, the effects of this is actually quite epidemic. So calling out on these undercutters is important.

Why? Because amateurs need to know they CAN be paid more. If they would just stop saying 'ok at this low rate i'll take it'.

why no like button here???

just to make it short, don't spoil the market... let's get paid better for EVERYONE rather than thinking about yourself, i always say, i don't mind losing a client to someone better than me, or even slightly cheaper than me... but i hate losing a client to those who undercut and spoil market coz they have other means of earning a living.

If one is the best at what they do then there is nothing to fear in any sort of market. All markets constantly ebb and flow and change. If one cannot stand the heat maybe it is time to get out of kitchen?

Yours is the first very measured and well-worded reply that brings across your message very well. I really appreciate your reply and understand where you are coming from, especially since this is your livelihood.

I just feel that
1) it's a free market. Sellers can choose to sell at whatever price. Buyers should also be given a choice to buy at whatever price. (Hence the varied pricing by photographers from Specialists, experts, professionals, assistants, freelancers, hobbyists to friends)
2) professionals should not be disturbed by the (cheaper) pricing of others because of they should be confident their products/services are unique and are sought after.
3) if your product/service/package etc can be replicated by a hobbyist, then maybe it's time to take another look at your business plan.
4) asking others not to enter the market/dilute the market just because it's your rice bowl is being a little unfair to the consumer and the new entrants to the market.

Nothing against you, alexcheng. Your thoughtful reply is worthy of respect. I just feel that there are many photographers who have this mindset that the industry owes them the favour of restrictive pricing.

I have utmost respect for people who ply a trade that demands a high technical skill coupled with a whole host of other positive attributes that photography business owners have. Their hard work and technical skill and experience deserves equivalent pay. They can and should charge more if they want to.

However, I don't think it's right for them to determine for the other photographers (amateur/freelance/hobbyist) what prices should be acceptable for projects that these hobbyists undertake. There is nothing wrong in anyone offering free photo services or charging very cheap services. It is after all a hobby. There is no disrespect intended to your profession. The hobbyists SHOULD NOT be your business competitiors at all!

It's probably gonna be painful to hear this, but really...
Don't ask a hobbyists to stop so that you can have more business. Up your game so that clients are willing to pay more for you in particular.

why didn't you apply? you seem to be doing a lot of fashion yourself, maybe it's more up your alley, some more you can support the client, in the future he'll give you more business... if you are a pro, if you're not a pro and only a hobbyist, well he can give you more things to shoot in the future... as a hobbyist i'm sure you'll like that

I'm a hobbyist. And yeah, I did apply. Hoping to get a callback to discuss further.

well said.

Even I am a freelance, but I tend to agree more with professional photographer.
Shooting for free or cheap is not good to the industry as while you are just a hobbylist, others may have photography as their livelihood. They need to feed their family and it is only your own opinion indeed.
Offering free service to friend is ok out of friendship but surely not to stranger who want cheap or free.
Goodluck anyway since you feel is good to use your time for cheap assignment.

The man has offered 20-30 per hour for a few hours gig. Take it or leave it.

Nothing amiss to forum guidelines here to see.

We can debate this other stuff in the other thread in Kopitiam I think. Please let this man have his ad bros. :)
