Hi, I just completed my basic open water course at leeway - www.leeway.com.sg The instructors really place alot of emphasis on safety and there are 2 theory and 2 pool sessions included in the course before you hit the open waters. I really enjoyed myself and felt that the drills the instructors taught (emergency rescue,buddy air sharing etc) are important to know if I dive myself in future. All equipment is also provided for the course so I need not spend on any other equipment.

10m rating is not enough for scuba diving. Open Water certifcation can dive to 18m and Advanced can dive to 30/40m.

As for gear purchase, there are several dive shops locally.

During the open water course, you won't be diving deep but you'd probably still exceed the 10m depth rating on your camera. But really, try to focus on learning first.

Usually stores will offer some sort of discount package for mask, snorkel and fins, so do check out a variety of shops as they will sell slightly different stuff.

normal depth for divers, the best condition to me, is around 15-20 meters. Seldom ppl goes deeper than that unless for wreck diving.

Anyhow, normal diving cert only "allows" you to dive till 30 meters, beyond that, you would require technical diving cert.

The instructors will tell you all these in the course.

Not true.... Mola Mola is spotted mostly at depth of 25-45m. Thresher Shark is spotted at depth of 20-25m in Malapascua. So, diving below 20m isn't only for wreck. And Padi AOW allows you to dive to 40m.... not to 30m.

actually, PADI Advanced Open Water only certifies you to dive to 30M, unless you have done the Deep Dive Adventure, then you can go to 40M with a certified dive pro. If you take the Deep Specialty, then you are certified to 40M with a similarly qualified buddy.

It's a common misconception..important to know the difference especially when it comes to insurance purposes. *touch wood*

I think Padi AOWD has 2 compulsory skills underwater navigation & deepdive plus 3 selective skills.
So limit for AOWD is 40m for non decompression dive.

Knighthunter> yes you are right that there are 2 adventure dives which are underwater navigation and deep diver. however, many dive centers fail to explain to their students what is the difference between doing an PADI adventure dive and a specialty.

The deep diver adventure in the advanced course is actually Part 1 of the deep diver specialty. A diver with a deep diver specialty can go to 40M unsupervised, but someone who has only completed the deep diver adventure can go to 30M, and 40M if with a certified dive pro.

Hence, you are also right when you say that recreational limits is 40M, but the caveat is only if you are appropriately certified

this is generally only useful and an important distinction when something happens and there is an investigation. but still, good to know!

Also what kind of insurance you take, even using DAN there are option for 30m,40m, and 50m (or 60 m can't remember). Important to know insurance cover limit and those fine print.
I am quite a new diver but I know the most important thing to have is reliable dive comp first, anything happen the log from dive comp is the best evidence to support claim.

yes you are right that there are different options for DAN insurance. one covers up to 30M, and others cover up to the depth the diver has the appropriate training certifications for. it's not like you can say "cover me to a depth of 50M even though PADI says i'm certified to 18M". i'm sure you can see now why it is important to know who is certified to 40M and who is not.

some travel insurance also covers scuba diving, but only up to 18M.
