looking for a school to learn diving

Agree.... for jaded Scuba Divers seeking new stuff/experience and have 'Done It All'... Bali might seems same old same old.

But if my 1st Open Water includes a giant Ship Weck at Tulamben... or Muck diving at Seraya.... Hell, even the House-Reef at the resort I when to have better sea-scape and sealife than some suppose 'Famous Site' I've been to.... :bsmilie:

just my $0.02
from my past experience, a newbie will love big stuff in preference to small critters in muck dive. cause they do not know wad's rare wad's not yet.

Liberty wreck is good, great exposure for newb.

shooting up from 18m won't really kill you but will most prob put you in a lot of pain especially if you go into deco.

50m on an inflated bcd.. yes that will kill you, if not the pain will

the most compression is at first 10m range, then 20m range. shooting up from 18m wont kill also some parts of your body paralyse la. best is dont shoot up like we are all taught. haha

If you want (relatively) cheap and fast, go for Singapore operators. If you have the time and money, take the course elsewhere, Phuket is a great choice. Sites like Ratcha Yai and Anemone reefs are great for beginners.

My friend wanted to save money and went for a course at P. Hantu, the visiblity (or the lack of it) turn him off completely, he gave up completing the course and a potentially wonderful hobby.

Me & my wife graduated from OWD in P.Hantu, it's horrible place to learn diving but if anyone can pass it every where else is like heaven.

many thanks for the kind people here who have been replying.
dont worry i am reading them.
cant wait to try and hope i will like it too

For places in Indonesia like Bali, the trick into getting a cheaper quote is by going through a diveshop in Jakarta, sometimes they have trips to more secluded islands too. But, I have to recommend a local diveshop as the better choice for your cert., I don't really find spending 2 days in the resort for lessons and pool dive worth your money.
I find tioman good for starters.

will consider when my leg heals. thanks brothers.

have you dive in singapore waters before? its not really that bad..

i've seen worse

Pulau Hantu is really bad... Tioman or Dayang is a good learning ground.

Maybe for a learning diver on course, the lack of visibility and unpredictable currents can quite disconcerting. Its hard for them to control buoyancy with little visual cues. Only with experience can one relax and enjoy what the area can offer.

Ya and tioman and dayang is getting stomped on by beginner divers who are very careless and don't learn proper bouyancy. Hantu is less forgiving and forces you to learn the proper skills lest you stomp on something nasty that you can't see. :bsmilie:

Err.... you prefer the ''Learn Fast or DIE" kind of training ?? :bsmilie::bsmilie:

I went for a course in Bali with some jakarta-based firends.
Unfortunately, this means that now I'm back in Singapore with no diving buddy (yet).
I wont call myself a natural diver. After all, I used 200 bars in 40 minutes during my divings.

I'd like to go diving more tho, for practise, etc. Anyone has any suggestions which diving centre/trips I can go to that hopefuly can pair me up with a good buddy that wont be too irked with my newbieness? Perhaps another new divers, or some very patient dive guide.

Hi... alot of Dive Centre here in Singapore offers trip to Malaysia (Tioman, Aur). As for Buddies.... you would most likely be paired with another diver during the trip. Good for you to meet people and get some new buddies :bsmilie: Check my earlier post on this threat for Website

Btw.... when I started... my 'record' was finishing 200Bar of air in 18minutes (include Decom), diving no deeper than 20metres.... didn't learn how to dive well when there is a strong U/W current until much later

All DC will pair you with whoever is available on the trip unless you went with your own buddy. Anyway, follow the drill when separated, ie look around for a minute or so and surface. And remember to do your safety stop. Advisable to have own smb.

Air consumption rate also depends on dive depth.;)

Sometimes, you might get into a group of 3 divers + 1 divemaster, so you would be buddies with the divemaster. Just sound out to the DM that you are new, he/she should know what to look out for.

In the region, you can try Bali, or Malaysia for June. Then Phuket for end of year, personally, I find the setup in Thailand more professional and thorough.

Don't worry about air consumption, it will improve the more you relax, after more dives. :)

haha, yeah thanks.
I know they will assign me to whoever is available. I'm just hoping it would be new-divers-friendly DC so that they will be fine if i have to go up earlier due to air consumptions.

How many dives it took you all to get really comfy that you start taking photos UW?
(just out of curiousity, i know it differs one person from another)

Started right after my 20+ dive.... there's no such thing as 'really Comfy' as it depends very much on you alone. I would say, as long as you could dive well enough not to get anyone into trouble.... you could start trying.... but that's just me.

Wah.. u sure have big lungs! ;)

I'm rather new to this as well. Biggest difficulty is finding the right buddy.. DC assigned buddy usually cannot wait for u to take photos.. in fact, i always feel like I'm holding up the whole group! :dunno:
