ALONSO CLOSER TO ANFIELD EXIT

Posted 13/07/09 18:00

Rafael Benitez is still battling to keep Javier Mascherano at Liverpool in the wake of Xabi Alonso making his position with the club virtually untenable.

Alonso is believed to have contacted the Liverpool manager and told him he wants to leave the club and join Real Madrid, but stopped short of asking for a transfer.

The Spain midfielder remarkably made the call less than 24 hours before he married his long-term girlfriend Nagore Aramburu in his home city of San Sebastian on Saturday, where the guests included former Liverpool team-mate Luis Garcia and Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta.

That plea to Benitez came as the Bernabeu giants stepped up their relentless pursuit of the 27-year-old, and although Benitez still does not want to sell, there seems little chance now that Alonso can remain a Liverpool player.

But whereas Alonso looks like he is on his way out of Anfield, Mascherano is still very much in Benitez's plans.

The manager intimated towards the end of last season that the Argentina captain would be given a new contract this summer, and that is now a matter of urgency for Benitez.

The Spanish boss took his squad to a Swiss training camp on Sunday, with Mascherano due to join them tomorrow.

That arrival has been delayed after the midfielder became a father for the second time at the weekend, but now he is due to travel to Switzerland on Thursday.

Benitez has privately claimed that suggestions that Mascherano's wife cannot settle in Liverpool has been an excuse, and he believes he is much more likely to persuade the midfielder to stay.

Alonso, surely, is now a different matter. Benitez reveals that he had a string of phone calls from Alonso while the player was away with Spain at the Confederation Cup in South Africa.

And since then he has become increasingly irritated by further calls from the player as Madrid's interest has heightened.

This latest call was probably the final straw, but Benitez will be determined to get a fee approaching £30million, despite Madrid's offer being considerably smaller than that figure.

Liverpool will play St Gallen on Wednesday in their first pre-season game, with a match against Rapid Vienna on Sunday.

Alonso is due to travel to Vienna on Sunday, along with the rest of Liverpool's Spanish contingent, to join up with the rest of the party heading from the Austrian capital to the Far East for two matches against Thailand and Singapore.

The chances of Alonso being on that trip now seem remote, with the player's insistence that his future is sorted out before the weekend.

While the Alonso and Mascherano situations have overshadowed Liverpool's pre-season preparation, the playing strength that Benitez still has at his disposal is not lost on defender Martin Skrtel.

And Skrtel believes the competition for places particularly in the centre of defence is a positive thing, where Liverpool have Daniel Agger, Jamie Carragher and Skrtel fighting for recognition.

Skrtel said: "For me, I hope there is a lot of improvement still to come. I am 24 as is Daniel Agger and that is still very young for a centre-back.

"Every day in training you can learn from players like Jamie. Every day I watch him, and last season Sami Hyypia - that helps me in my job.

"It is very important and very good for us. Hopefully when we play in the future the things we learn every day will come through in our games.

"I have been competing not only with Daniel but also Jamie. Everyone wants to play but when you don't you just have to wait for your chance. You have to show you are a good player."

if alonso leave, then our chance of winning the EPL next season will be very very slim. :(

dont worry...we have local lads like jay spearings eagerly waiting for a chance to play...if alonso leaves,Gerrard will revert to midfield...benayoun can link between Torres & midfield... i'd say sell anyone not interested in playing for LFC...

When RB approached Villa for GB services, GOD knows how much Alonso must have felt threatened. He must have felt unwanted. Now, Alonso got a potential suitor and RB felt threatened...:bsmilie:

Serves RB right!! IMHO...

i think u're not being realistic.

alonso has been quietly linking midfield to attack and covers the defence well.

together with masch n gerrard, we truly have the best midfield in the world.

selling alonso will be like losing a vital organ.

dun see anyone having the same vision, tenacity and class to fill his place.

if he has to leave, he mux go at at least 40mil GBP. otherwise we're taken for a ride yet again.

alonso go n so too will our EPL title.

so many idiotic player go in hard on him n they all kena yellow n red card.

as for masch, i think his temperament is suspect.

but to b honest, we cannot afford to lose any of our big 3 midfield generals if we are to win the title this season.

who to replace alonso?

i dun think the young local lads are ready.

benayoun is an attacking midfielder.

jay spearing is too inexperienced.

in short, i dun see anyone with enough class to replace alonso at the moment.

if he stay for this season, we will definitely win the EPL.

if the player heart is not with us, keep for what?
go far far away lor
