Liverpool boss Benitez lines up £12m bid for Middlesbrough winger Downing
Stewart Downing has emerged as the preferred choice to solve Rafa Benitez’s need for more width and will be the subject of a £12m bid by Liverpool at the end of the season.
Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon was also in the frame, but Benitez has switched focus to the left flank and Middlesbrough winger Downing, after being impressed by Dirk Kuyt’s impact on the right this season.
Benitez said: ‘Someone called him Mr Duracell, and that is a good description for him, because he is like the bunny in the advert. He is always on the go, always running.’

McMahon on South-East Asia friendlies
Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McMahon has spoken about the clubs forthcoming pre-season friendly matches in South-East Asia.
The Liverpool born former England international played for the Reds between 1985-91, scoring 29 goals in 204 appearances. He went on to play for Manchester City and Swindon before managing Swindon, Blackpool and Perth Glory.
McMahon is part of Profitable Group, the Singapore company who are promoting Liverpools friendly games against Thailand in Bangkok on July 22nd and Singapore on July 26th.
The brief tour will be a chance for Rafa Benitez to try out his 2009/10 season plans, whilst expanding Liverpools fan base and commercial opportunities in that part of the world.
McMahon says the Thai and Singapore locals will give the Reds a fantastic reception this summer.
They probably dont realise whats going to hit them when they arrive here. They dont realise the enormity of the support they have here, he said.
I just think the players will be overwhelmed by the reception they get.
Im excited for the players. I want to make it worthwhile because its in my interest for them to do well.
I know a lot of the players. I know a lot of people at the club. Rafa is excited, Sammy Lee certainly is - hes always enthusiastic about getting out and travelling.

REDS TO DECIDE ALONSO`S FUTURE
Posted 19/05/09 09:46Xabi Alonso's agent admits Liverpool will decide the midfielder's future at the end of the season.
The Spain international has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks with a number of clubs thought to be lining up summer moves for the player.
Real Madrid are believed to be leading the chase for Alonso with the 27-year-old thought to be one of presidental candidate Florentino Perez's top transfer targets if he gains control at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Alonso's agent Ignacio Ibanez has refused to confirm the midfielder will remain at Anfield next season, admitting Liverpool will have the final say on any possible transfer.
"Many things could happen in the summer," Ibanez told the Daily Star.
"The first is to finish the season and after that to attend to other matters.
"Xabi has signed for three more years and his future depends on Liverpool."
