CARRAGHER FAITH IN REDS DEPTH

Posted 24/02/09 20:09

Jamie Carragher insists Liverpool can win in the Spanish capital even if Steven Gerrard fails to overcome his hamstring problem ahead of the clash against Real Madrid.

A late decision will be made on Gerrard's fitness to figure in the Champions League last-16 first-leg clash.

Carragher said: "We can get a good result without Steven. We have done it in the past, he is a great player - one of the best in the world - and we hope he will be fit.

"But when we won the trophy in 2005 there were plenty of games when Steven didn't play. Obviously we are a better side when he plays, and hopefully he will be playing."

Carragher was in buoyant mood despite Liverpool's perilous position in the domestic title race with Manchester United seven points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League and he is cleanly looking forward to playing in the Bernabeu.

He said: "It is fantastic to be here, I get very excited about ties like this because you want to experience playing in the big stadiums. We have never played here so a lot of us were really pleased with the draw.

"This is against the team who are probably the biggest in European football, and Liverpool are proud that we are up there alongside AC Milan and Real as the three most successful teams in Europe.

"For two of those teams to be pitted against each other in the Champions League shows now how big this game is.

"There's 14 European Cups won between us, and hopefully we can make it six for us this season."

As for the chances of winning in Europe and in the Premier League, Carragher said: "We have to still believe we can win both competitions.

"They are both important to Liverpool and we know we have dropped another couple of points behind Manchester United, but there are more than 30 points still to play for so anything can still happen.

"We will never give up until it is mathematically impossible, but for now we are putting all that behind us to concentrate on beating Real Madrid.

"But it will be a pleasure to be on the same pitch as Raul, a true legend at this club. There have been times when people have been writing him off, but he has shown great character to continue to prove them wrong.

"There have been so many big name players at Madrid for big money, and he is still around, still scoring the goals to break club records like he has just achieved.

"He is similar to Steven Gerrard. When you think of Real Madrid you think of Raul. When you think of Liverpool you think of Steven.

"Their good current form could be a boost to their confidence, but let's wait and see what happens on the pitch."

BENITEZ WILL NOT GAMBLE WITH GERRARD

Posted 24/02/09 20:01

Rafael Benitez played an elaborate game of cloak and danger over the fitness of his captain Steven Gerrard here ahead of tomorrow's Champions League showdown with Real Madrid.

Gerrard travelled to the Spanish capital in manager Benitez's 20-man squad with a huge question mark hanging over his damaged hamstring, and whether he could be risked in the first leg of this last-16 clash at the magnificent Santiago Bernabeu.

With Liverpool's domestic title challenge hanging by a thread, their continued involvement in the world's biggest club competition is vital for the rest of their season.

And Gerrard is needed to lead from the front if they are going to have any chance against a Madrid side in rampant form, having won their last nine La Liga games in succession.

A senior Madrid official went as far as to say Liverpool would be hammered by the Spanish champions.

So Gerrard is clearly needed, but Benitez privately insisted that he would wait until tomorrow lunchtime before making a final decision.

The Spaniard said today: "Steven was not fit to face Manchester City on Sunday, but we will now wait to see how he does in two training sessions before making a decision about this game.

"It will not be a gamble. If the doctor says he is okay, then it is not a risk. Steven is more mature now, he would not make a decision that would be considered a risk.

"He will be involved in light training sessions, we will not try to hide anything. We will make a decision when we are sure.

"Gerrard knows he must give something to the team, and if he cannot do that he will know he is not ready. I can trust Steven on that."

It was not only the Gerrard issue that occupied a packed media conference ahead of the match between two clubs who have won the European Cup 14 times between them.

Asked whether he felt the matches with Madrid would have any impact on his ongoing contract negotiations, Benitez said: "Of course not, these are important games for us as a club

"We have important games now and I only want to concentrate on football.

"You have to judge a manager for his career, not just one or two games."

Benitez's future has been a subject for discussion over the weeks of contract wrangling, and there are even murmurings that the American owners may lose patience.

That would open the way for a possible move from Madrid for his services, with current coach Juande Ramos only on a short-term contract.

Much will depend on the club's forthcoming presidential elections, but Benitez said: "I am only concerned by Real's 11 players on the pitch, nothing else concerns me.

"It is more important to concentrate on that than the other things."

Benitez clearly has fond memories of the club he has always supported.

He said: "This is a big game, but not just because I used to play and work here. I am a professional, so I want to win with my team, that is the only motivation for me.

"I cannot think about the past, I cannot change anything, all I can do is try to win this game now.

"I have memories here. I have met many friends today. It's a pleasure to come back and see so many faces that I remember."

But he acknowledged that former Spurs boss Ramos has done a fine job in such a short space of time to turn around Real's fortress.

He said: "Ramos has done very well here, Real are winning many games in a row. But it is not about managers and coaches, it is only about what the players do on the pitch. This is not a personal thing.

"He has said, though, that big games are decided by small details. And he is a professional and I agree with that. Maybe he should have a talk with his chairman (who has said Real will hammer Liverpool) and decide what should be said.

"But they are winning games in a row and so have more confidence. Defensively they have improved. Some players who were injured are back.

"And signing Lassana Diarra means they have two midfielders who can defend more, so they are more solid."

Bookies suspend betting on Rafa to leave Anfield
By Soccernet staff

February 25, 2009

Britain's top bookmakers have suspended betting on Rafael Benitez leaving Liverpool.

Both Skybet and William Hill have taken large sums of money on the Spanish manager to depart since Tuesday evening forcing them to stop taking bets on Wednesday morning.

William Hill reported that they were forced to drop the odds on Benitez being the next Premier League manager to leave his job, either sacked or through resignation, from 20/1 into even money before they suspended the market. And Skybet saw a flurry of bets on Benitez not to be at Anfield at the start of the 2009-10 season before reinstating that market at odds of 2/5.

Rumours circulating on Tuesday afternoon claimed Benitez would leave the club before Saturday's trip to Liverpool though it was clearly business as usual ahead of the Champions League trip to Real Madrid with the manager walking with the players and continuing preparations for the Round of 16 tie.

The odds on former boss Kenny Dalglish returning as their next manager have been shortened to 3/1.

Fans may question the timing with Liverpool at the Bernabeu. Real have been strongly linked with Benitez for some time and with his Anfield contract wrangle no nearer a conclusion the rumours are sure to intensify.

Benitez has been in discussions over a new contract on Merseyside for months but has failed to reach an agreement with his current deal running out next summer. It was reported at the weekend that the 48-year-old has rejected four separate drafts of the contract.

Benitez dodged questions about his future during Tuesday's press conference in Madrid.

The main sticking points have surrounded control of transfers and the club's Academy, with Benitez wanting full responsibility for the direction the club is taking.

It appears owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks are reluctant to rubber stamp a move which would marginalise the position of chief executive Rick Parry.

Benitez is a hugely popular figure among Liverpool fans and his departure would cause great anger, no matter what the circumstances, though at present there is no concrete evidence that Benitez will walk away from Anfield.
