RAFA CONFIRMS ZAKI INTEREST

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has confirmed he is checking on Wigan star Ami Zaki, after the African hit-man hit a memorable double at Anfield on Saturday.

The Egyptian striker has taken the Premier League by storm this season with seven goals in his first eight game making him top-scorer in England's top-flight.

He highlighted his form with a brilliant brace at Liverpool, which included a stunning volley at the Kop end.

Wigan signed the forward on-loan from El Zamalek in his homeland and they always stated that they had secured first-refusal on him.

However, in recent days, Zamalek have insisted that they will sell the player to which ever club they want, and Manchester City are already thought to have made contact via their new Abu Dhabi-based owners.

"We will have the right to sell Zaki to any club," Zamalek president Mamdouh Abbas stated.

But Benitez, who looks set to be in the market for a new front-man come January, has intriguingly admitted that he will also be taking a close look at Zaki after his outstanding display against the Spaniard's side on Saturday.

"Everybody will be checking his situation now," Benitez admitted.

Rafa has no regrets over Aguero near-miss

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez believes Sergio Aguero may not have become one of the world's most sought-after players had he taken the Argentina striker to Anfield.

The 20-year-old was linked with a move to the Merseysiders before opting to join Atletico Madrid, the Reds' Champions League opponents on Wednesday, from Independiente in 2006.

Aguero has since gone on to justify his price tag, thought to have been around £15million, and would now be likely to fetch at least double that fee were he to leave the Vicente Calderon.

But Benitez told The Times: "Two years ago the agents were talking with us about players and he was one of those but he was too young and [Atletico] paid big money for him, around 18 million euros [about £14 million] for a player who was a risk.

"In the Premier League it's different and sometimes players will need more time here to improve."

now everyone knows he's got a drawer full of boxers with kuyts name & no.18 printed :bsmilie:

And he is only 18 this year!:bsmilie:

rafa should make reina run up and down when we have corners at the other end so he will not speed during his off time again. :bsmilie:

TORRES MISSES MADRID TRIP
Paul Eaton 20 October 2008

Fernando Torres will not be travelling to Madrid with the Liverpool squad this week to watch Liverpool face his former club at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.
Torres has been ruled out of the match with a hamstring injury but had been offered a VIP seat at the ground by the Atletico president.

But the Reds - in conjunction with the player - have decided his time will be better spent at Melwood continuing with his rehabilitation programme.

"We talked with the doctor and physios, and with the player himself, and we decided it was important for him to stay here and continue with his recovery," manager Rafael Benitez said today.

The Liverpool squad for tomorrow morning's flight to the Spanish capital will be boosted by the returns of Javier Mascherano and Ryan Babel, both of whom missed Saturday's victory over Wigan
