O`NEILL: BARRY WANTED TO PLAY

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill insisted "nothing would have stopped" Gareth Barry playing in the UEFA Cup qualifying match against FH Hafnarfjordur.

By appearing in Villa's 4-1 win in Iceland, Barry becomes ineligible for this season's Champions League until after Christmas, and if he joins Liverpool before the transfer window closes they would have to cope without him.

But O'Neill said: "He was in the right frame of mind and wanted to play. Nothing would have stopped him so that is pleasing.

"I have no idea what will happen between now and the end of August.

"He knew the consequences of playing tonight so the decision was very much his."

after what torres has done last season, i think most teams will double or triple mark him. time for keane and kyut to fill the gap when torres drag the defenders wide.

torres had a crunching time in that match. and we needed some bulldogs in the centre of the park. mascherano was sorely missed. gerrard coming back from injury couldn't be risked.
