middle v LIVERPOOL!

Middlesbrough v Liverpool

Riverside Stadium
Saturday, 12 January
Kick-off: 1500 GMT

Middlesbrough must reshuffle their midfield with Julio Arca and Lee Cattermole both suspended.

Gary O'Neil and George Boateng are expected to play, but Jonathan Woodgate (hamstring) and Tuncay Sanli (knee) remain doubts.

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger will play for the first time since breaking a metatarsal bone in September.

Alvaro Arbeloa, Jose Reina, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will return after being rested last week.

Middlesbrough (from): Schwarzer, Turnbull, Young, Woodgate, Wheater, Pogatetz, Huth, Riggott, O'Neil, Boateng, Rochemback, Johnson, Downing, Tuncay, Lee, Hutchinson, Grounds.

Liverpool (from): Reina, Arbeloa, Finnan, Carragher, Agger, Hyypia, Riise, Pennant, Gerrard, Alonso, Mascherano, Babel, Lucas, Voronin, Kuyt, Torres, Crouch, Benayoun, Kewell, Skrtel, Itandje.

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate:

"Liverpool are a class side and it is always a big occasion when they come and play you.

"Our home form hasn't been as good as it could have been so we've got to make this place an intimidating place to come to again.

"We have had three wins in six games, which would have been a decent record if we'd had a few draws as well."

Liverpool midfielder Jermaine Pennant:
"We've got to be up for these games as if we were playing one of the big four.

"I remember last year it was 0-0. They'll sit back like most teams do against us.

"It can be frustrating and feel like they're spoiling the game but they're the underdogs and they've got to do what they've got to do."

BIG-MATCH FACTS

Liverpool, in the top five, take on Middlesbrough, who are just outside the bottom five in this trans-Pennies fixture.

Gareth Southgate's Teessiders have lost five home league games; Rafa Benitez' Merseysiders have been beaten just once on the road.

Sacchi Slams Juventus Sissoko Signing

Former Milan great Arrigo Sacchi has slammed Juventus’ imminent signing of Liverpool midfielder Momo Sissoko, saying that the player has no quality.

A fee of between €13-15m is believed to have been agreed between Liverpool and Juventus, but Sacchi does not rate the ability of the ex-Valencia player.

“I know Sissoko well and I watched him a lot in Spain,” said the ex-Milan legend Sacchi, who spent time in La Liga as Coach of Atletico Madrid and as director of football of Real Madrid.

“Sissoko is a plughole, he stops the play, but he cannot play football and has no quality.”

Juventus boss Claudio Ranieri is a huge admirer of Sissoko, from his days as boss of Valencia.

The 22-year-old should become the Tinkerman’s first signing of this month’s transfer window, although the move has not gone down well with a lot of Juventus supporters.
