Liverpool FC Ultimatum: Roy Hodgson Has To Leave as Soon as Possible

By Brook Z. (Contributor) on December 29, 2010

There used to be a time when Anfield was synonymous with a fortress - no team could defeat Liverpool at home without a fight. Tonight Liverpool lost at home without a murmur.

As if losing to newly promoted Blackpool and League Two Northampton at Anfield were not enough, Liverpool suffered a humiliating 1-0 defeat to bottom dwellers Wolverhampton thanks to Stephen Ward's shock goal.

18 matches, 22 points. Negative two goal difference. Resounding boos at the end of the match.

How the mighty have fallen.

For months many people, especially those ingrained in the British media, have claimed Hodgson to be the caretaker manager for Liverpool. Don't blame him, they said, for a bad squad that he inherited from Rafa Benitez. Don't blame him for the poor run of results either.

Now, however, there is absolutely NO way for anyone to avoid the main culprit at hand any longer.

Roy Hodgson, predictably, used a 4-4-2, with Meireles, a central midfielder, as a winger, and Dirk Kuyt, a striker, as the other winger. He once again started the horribly out of form Paul Konchesky at the left back and Martin Skrtel as the center back, despite the numerous errors he has committed this year.

Anyone with a football brain would have realized that Meireles and Kuyt are not wingers, that Fabio Aurelio is better at the left than Konchesky, that, against a bottom dwelling team, you have to push and press the opposition rather than sit back and let the opponent attack.

Yet Wolves dominated the game early, got the lone goal, and triumphed. A dreadfully famous loss for Liverpool, who have not finished below 8th since 1962, but now are well in the bottom half of the table.

No one is claiming that this team is a top 4 team, as Hodgson has accused his critics of saying. But this team is certainly not a mid-table team, nor a bottom-half team, nor a team that loses to relegation fighters like Wolverhampton at home, nor a team that loses to newly promoted Blackpool at home, nor a team that loses to League Two teams at home, nor a team that, quite frankly, can't even have more than three shots on goal per game.

Roy Hodgson is the main culprit for Liverpool sitting back, letting the pressure of the opponents get deep into their own territory. A quick show of where the ball lay during the match showed that 46 percent of possession was in Liverpool's half, only 24 percent in midfield. This shows convincingly that Liverpool is constantly passing back and holding the ball in their own half.

Now is time for Roy Hodgson to leave. There is no need to document all the insults he has hurled at others in the media, nor the deflections of responsibility for failures, nor the attacks on everything Liverpool fans hold dear.

No, there is a time for the Liverpool Way, but the time is not now. Hodgson was never truly hired by someone who cared for the club. He was hired during the infamous Hicks and Gillette era, when nothing was being invested in the club. Hodgson is the remnant of that bygone, wicked era, and with that he must leave as well.

And no, Hodgson, we are not "crucifying" you, as you awkwardly put it. We are trying to save the club from utter disaster.

Every week, Hodgson psychologically plays Liverpool down by claiming the opposition is superior, by criticizing his players, by claiming that the team is not good enough, by refusing to put any belief into his players. He cannot believe the sort of expectations Liverpool have.

I'm sorry. But Liverpool has 18 domestic titles and 5 European cups. We have high expectations, year in, year out.

Sorry, Roy, but there is no choice left. No self-respecting fan, no loyal Liverpool supporter, wants you at the helm any longer. Your face after falling behind against Wolverhampton was dreadful, hardly anything to inspire the team to a comeback. You simply are out of your depth, completely unaware of how to use players in the right positions, cannot tell the difference between a quality and Championship-level left back, utterly useless.

Mr.Hodgson, you deserve to be sacked 100 percent.

But will NESV do it? They probably won't, as they have made clear many times. And the fans will suffer, while the owners and Hodgson continue to get their fat paychecks from us foolish fans who continue to follow the weekly rubbish.

How the mighty have fallen.
