Reto Ziegler 'in line for Liverpool transfer' in January

Reto Ziegler could be on his way to Liverpool in January after it was revealed Sampdoria are considering an offer from the Reds.



The versatile Switzerland international will be available for a bargain price in January and could help to solve Liverpool's problems on the left flank, as he can play at full-back or in midfield.

He has less than a year left on his contract and his situation in Genoa has alerted a number of clubs across Europe and Sampdoria have already received several bids, reports IMScouting.

Among them are offers from Serie A rivals Juventus and Lazio, and one from Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.

According to German website 4-4-2, none of those clubs have matched the offer from Liverpool and the Reds are now in pole position to land Ziegler in January for a fee in the region of £3 million.

Ziegler will be a familiar name to fans of English football, as he spent three years at Spurs earlier in his career.

However, he struggled to hold down a first-team place at White Hart Lane and had loan spells at Hamburg, Wigan Athletic and Sampdoria before making his move to Italy permanent in 2007.

Liverpool To Make Significant Midfield Signing In January

Roy Hodgson could be set to end Stephen Ireland’s Aston Villa misery, by bringing him to Anfield this January. the midfielder has struggled to hold down a first-team place at Villa Park, after being brought to the club from Manchester City last summer.

New Villa boss Gerard Houllier does not apppear to be a big fan of the schemer, regularly selecting players such as Nigel Reo-Coker ahead of him.

Stephen Ireland showed during his time at Manchester City, that he is in fact a top-class Premier League player, and Liverpool would be the perfect club for him to get back on track. Hodgson is a long-time admirer of the dynamic midfielder, and would jump at the chance of signing him for the reported figure of around £8million.

The Liverpool boss will be given significant funds to strengthen his squad this January, and Ireland looks set to be his first major signing.

Another top priority will be a striker, with names such as Mario Gomez, and Fernando Llorente recently linked with a move to Anfield.

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that he had considered a move for Carlton Cole last summer.

The striker was left frustrated as West Ham suffered a 3-0 defeat this evening but could have been plying his trade at Anfield and was continually linked in the previous transfer window whilst Avram Grant alleged on deadline day that an offer had been tabled.

And although Hodgson insists that no bid was submitted to the Hammers, he conceded that the former England international is a player he does particularly rate.

He said: "Cole is a good player and was one of the players I was watching and we were looking at a lot of forwards.

"He was one I watched and we talked about but we didn't make any particular move for him.

"At Liverpool we are always linked with every player but I do like Carlton Cole and think he's a good player, but there was no offer made for him."
