Five Ways Liverpool Can Win At OT...

Roy Hodgson and his Liverpool side drew little credit from Sunday's uninspiring scoreless draw at St Andrews, but a victory in Sunday's clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford would see that insipid 90 minutes forgotten amid a new wave of optimism.
Easier said than done of course, but more or less this same Liverpool side has shown the wherewithal to beat United on several recent occasions - and victory should not be out of their reach this weekend, even without implementing wholesale changes to the side that failed to break down Birmingham.
Of course, the level of performance will need to be of a different order, but Hodgson has a foundation to work upon and could utilise some of the tactics used in recent unexpected results against Manchester United.
With that in mind, here are five things that Roy Hodgson can do to give Liverpool a fighting chance at Old Trafford...
1) Put Balls Over The Top For Torres
One notable feature of Liverpool's 4-1 victory at Old Trafford in 2008/09 was the clear policy to hit long balls over the heads of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand for Fernando Torres to chase. Whether by accident or design, Liverpool naturally lie a little deep due to the lack of pace in the centre of their back four, whereas United like to hold a high defensive line - squeezing high up the pitch from the back to increase the pressure on the opposition. In the 4-1 win, Liverpool managed to make United's defenders sit a little deeper than usual in fear of Torres's power and pace with their policy of hitting long clearances in behind United defenders into areas for Torres to chase. In so doing, Liverpool unhinged the link between United's midfield and its centre-halves and created space for Steven Gerrard, who was tucked in behind Torres, to exploit. Time and again, Torres got the better of Vidic - and was quickly supported by the breaking Gerrard, Kuyt etc. A similar approach to discommode the United defensive line could reap similar dividends.
2) Deny United Space Out Wide
In Liverpool's 2-0 victory over United last season, the attacking intentions of Liverpool's full-backs were curtailed by Rafa Benitez - who seldom let them push into the United half. Liverpool's wide midfield players worked diligently in tandem with the full-backs to deny United space and time out wide and prevent them from getting behind the Liverpool defence into dangerous crossing positions. Last Sunday in Birmingham, Paul Konchesky and Milan Jovanovic on the left and Maxi Rodriguez and Glen Johnson on the right displayed similar intent. Hodgson may employ the same tactics on Sunday to blunt this critical facet of the United attack.
3) Keep Gerrard In The Hole
Joe Cole is available again after his suspension and is likely to figure, but Hodgson should resist the temptation to play him in behind Torres while moving Steven Gerrard back into central midfield. Up to now, the talk from the manager and Cole would suggest that he will be deployed in the hole behind Torres. But even in his peak years, Cole has simply not been as effective in that position as Gerrard. And so far in his limited appearances for Liverpool, Cole has not convinced anyone that this would be the best use of his abilities. (If neither Mourinho nor Ancellotti believed that Cole could do what is required in that pivotal position, then it would seem somewhat perverse that Hodgson should think otherwise.)
Granted, the Gerrard-Torres pairing has not fired thus far this season - but that is largely a function of Torres's lack of match sharpness and the poor service and support from the Liverpool midfield. Hodgson has used Gerrard in the central midfield role that many pundits insist is his best position - but Gerrard has not impressed there. If Rafael Benitez proved one thing in his time at Anfield, it was that playing Gerrard in a more advanced and freer role is the best way to harness his talents. Hodgson should do likewise.
4) Clamp Down On Scholes
Paul Scholes has been one of United's stand-out performers this season, pulling the strings to phenomenal effect. Liverpool need to make his life a much harder - prevent him getting the time and space he has revelled in so far this campaign. Deploying Gerrard behind Torres is ostensibly an offensive tactic - but it can have its defensive benefits, as he would be well-positioned to put the squeeze on United's diminutive and aging play-maker.
5) Unleash Meireles
In his 15-minute cameo against Birmingham, Raul Meireles highlighted just why he could be a key signing for Liverpool. The Portuguese international will provide a more direct attacking approach to a Liverpool midfield that has been far too conservative for too long. Christian Poulsen and Leiva Lucas are too similar and offer little or nothing in an attacking sense. Hodgson's remodelled midfield is more likely to see the Dane paired with the former Porto man. Poulsen will patrol in front of the defence - operating almost horizontally across the field, while Meireles will be expected to add a vertical, box-to-box dimension, adding steel defensively and support to Liverpool's attack.
Hodgson may feel that such a big game may be too early for his new man in terms of a starting berth - but where better for the Portuguese player - who has serious experience in the Champions League and internationally - to make his first Premier League start? Given his price tag and reputation, Liverpool need him to hit the ground running. And Meireles is not going to adapt to English football by holding a watching brief from the bench.
