LIVERPOOL MUST STUMP UP FOR COLE
The Gossip Column has always tended to leave things to the last minute. Deadlines, exam revision, packing - it always ends up going wrong in one way or another, but frankly we never learn, and it costs us.

Liverpool might know how that feels, if the word of The Sun is gospel.

They report that Liverpool are chasing big Carlton Cole, but leaving a bid until the closing weeks of the transfer window could cost them some serious lolly.

The paper reports that West Ham want £20million for their man, a premium being charged because they won't have time to bring in a replacement before the end of August.

"If things happened earlier, maybe the price could have been lower," an 'insider' told The Sun.

LIVERPOOL GETTING BUSY

Also, The Daily Mail make the following announcment:

'Liverpool have agreed a £2m deal with Middlesbrough for goalkeeper Brad Jones and have finalised the £5.5m signing of Christian Poulsen from Juventus.

'Liverpool, who hope to agree a new one year contract with defender Jamie Carragher, 32, this week, have reportedly been offered Barcelona midfielder Alexander Hleb as a potential makeweight in a deal for Javier Mascherano but the Argentinian is still expected to join Inter Milan.'

GERA PLAYS DOWN LIVERPOOL LINK
Posted 12/08/10 16:32

Hungary captain Zoltan Gera has hailed Steven Gerrard as one of the best midfielders in the world - but maintains he is not about to join the England skipper at Liverpool.

New Reds boss Roy Hodgson is reported to be ready to raid his old club for the attack-minded midfielder, who helped Fulham reach the final of the Europa League last season.

Gera enjoyed his involvement in the friendly against England at Wembley on Wednesday night, where the Hungarians took a shock lead before eventually being undone by Gerrard's quickfire second-half brace.

However, the 31-year-old - also said to be interesting Werder Bremen - insists his mind is focused on continuing the Cottagers' success under new boss Mark Hughes rather than any talk of a move to Anfield.

"The England team is full of top players. Against us, they played under pressure because the supporters were not happy," he said.

"But they showed character, because they were 1-0 down and then changed the game.

"I love Steven Gerrard as a player - he is a great captain for England and scored two goals, he is one of the best midfielders in the world."

However, when asked about the rumours of a switch to Liverpool, Gera insisted: "I do not know anything about this.

"I was happy at Fulham with Roy, but he has moved on to Liverpool and I am still at Fulham. Mark Hughes is a very good manager, we have had some great training sessions.

"He wants a different Fulham, and I think the team will be capable of these new things."

BORO DENY BRAD JONES AGREEMENT
Posted 12/08/10 16:27

Middlesbrough have denied that any deal has been agreed to sell goalkeeper Brad Jones.

Reports suggested the Australia international was set to join Liverpool, but Boro shot down the claims.

"Boro have confirmed that they have not reached an agreement with any club for the sale of goalkeeper Brad Jones," said a statement on their website.

However, manager Gordon Strachan refused to confirm that Jones would be in the squad for the trip to face Leicester on Saturday.

"I've no idea, we'll pick a squad on Friday of available people," he said.

"The big bonus is Jason Steele did terrifically well at Chesterfield."
