LIVERPOOL SIGN STERLING
Posted 27/02/10 19:33

Liverpool have signed highly-rated England youth international Raheem Sterling from Coca-Cola Championship side Queens Park Rangers for an undisclosed fee.

The 15-year-old attacking midfielder, who was also attracting interest from Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham, will join the club's academy in Kirkby.

"The success of our academy is vital to the future progress of the club and we have made clear that we will invest in outstanding young talent," said Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow.

"Raheem is a very exciting young English player whose progress was being closely monitored by many other leading clubs and I'm delighted he's joining us.

"Frank McParland (academy director) and his staff have done a great job in bringing him to Liverpool."

Fit again Torres urges Liverpool boss Benitez to unleash him

Star striker Fernando Torres has urged Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez not to wrap him in cotton wool and to let him fire the Reds to Champions League qualification.

Since returning from injury, the Spanish striker has been used sparingly by Benitez, coming on as a substitute for Liverpool in last weekend's Premier League clash with Manchester City and at Unirea in the Europa League in midweek.

However, the News of the World quotes a source close to Torres, saying "Fernando wants to start games not just be used for 15 minutes or so at the end.

"He is absolutely confident of his fitness and he does not need to be protected any more. It is time for him to be fully involved.

"Rafa has been cautious with him, which is understandable, but, at this stage of the season, Fernando is willing to take any risk to help Liverpool finish in the top four.

"There are only 11 games left and everybody at Liverpool knows time is running out. So if Fernando can play a major part in all the games and score important goals, he's desperate to do that."

Liverpool take on Blackburn Rovers today at Anfield although it remains to be seen what part Torres will play. The 26 year-old has scored 12 goals in 20 matches for the Reds so far this season.

i think if the man himself is confident enough to start, no one should stand in his way.

think rafa will probably wanna protect him and not risk starting him against a physical side like blackburn

Torres starts; Mascherano at right-back vs Rovers

Fernando Torres returns from injury and starts for Liverpool against Blackburn Rovers today while Javier Mascherano plays at right back.

Pepe Reina is in goal with Mascherano at right back and Fabio Aurelio at left-back. Jamie Carragher partners Daniel Agger in the middle.

Steven Gerrard is pushed back into midfield and will start alongside Lucas.

Yossi Benayoun, Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodriguez play behind Torres, who starts as the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Alberto Aquilani, Ryan Babel and Emiliano Insua are all on the bench.

Meanwhile, youngsters Martin Kelly and Daniel Ayala are also involved.

Starting: Reina, Mascherano, Aurelio, Agger, Carragher, Lucas, Gerrard, Benayoun, Kuyt, Rodriguez, Torres.

Subs: Cavalieri, Aquilani, Babel, Insua, Ngog, Kelly, Ayala.
