RIISE COMPLAIN!!

'The time for mistakes is over' - Riise

John Arne Riise has spelled out Liverpool's European task - no more mistakes allowed.

The Norwegian defender will be part of the Champions League team to face Besiktas in Istanbul tonight in a Group D clash vital to both sides.

Liverpool have taken just one point from two previous group matches, while the Turkish side have lost both their games.

Riise is well aware of the importance of a match Liverpool need to win.

'We know what is at stake,' he confirmed.

'We have managed only one point so far in this group and that is just not good enough.

'We have to take the three points and then beat Besiktas again when they come to Anfield next time around. Then we will be back in with a chance of qualifying.'

Riise believes Saturday's win at Everton could be the key to Liverpool's season.

He said: 'That could be the turning point.

'We have had a few dips this season, dropped some points in Europe and in the Premier League - and the win at Everton has given us something to build on, something to be positive about.

'We have only four games left in this group now, so the time for mistakes is over.

'We know we are not in the best position, and the home defeat by Marseille has been very damaging. But we have come to Istanbul before and produced great comebacks, so this is the time to do it again.'

Riise has no doubts Liverpool are capable of far better than they have recently shown.

'We were not at our best in Porto and then lost to Marseille, so we really have to do something about it here. We know we have not been at our best, so something has to change.'

Liverpool could have midfielder Xabi Alonso back in their side after a broken metatarsal, although Fernando Torres did not travel to Istanbul yesterday - having failed to convince the medical team he is over his foot injury.

The Reds have youngster Jack Hobbs in the squad as cover at the back, and there are suggestions that Dutch winger Ryan Babel will get his chance to impress.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez said: 'It was impossible for Fernando to be here. He was not right, and we now must hope he will be fit to face Arsenal at the weekend.

'We know Besiktas are a good team - but we also know we have to win this game to keep our qualification aims on course.

'I have some good memories of Istanbul - winning the (2005) Champions League here with Liverpool and also beating Besiktas in the UEFA Cup when I was manager of Valencia. I would be happy with a similar result this time around.'

GERRARD WANTS DERBY `SPIRIT`!!

Steven Gerrard says that Liverpool will need the 'spirit' they showed against Everton to get the victory they need against Besiktas tonight.

The Reds go to Turkey with only one point from their opening two Champions League games against Porto and Marseille.

But at least they will be buoyed by a Merseyside derby victory snatched from the jaws of defeat on Saturday.

The headlines might have been about Mark Clattenburg's refereeing decisions and Gerrard's substitution, but Liverpool had to dig deep to get victory.

"That is exactly the kind of spirit we are going to need tonight," Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo.

"We know this is going to be a difficult game because Besiktas are looking to improve their points total as well.

"I'm sure the atmosphere will be something else because the Turkish fans are always passionate but we are just going to have to deal with that.

"We haven't done ourselves justice in the Champions League so far and we would have obviously been looking to get more than just a point from our first two games.

"We haven't played well and that's why we find ourselves in the position that we are in but the important thing now is to look forward, starting from tonight against Besiktas.

"I'd be lying if I said I know a lot about Besiktas but I do know a bit about them and I'm in no doubt that by the time we take to the field for the game we will have seen a number of tapes of them and we will have been well briefed on them by the manager.

"We will definitely be well prepared for the game. But, to be honest, it is not about them, it is about us.

"We have to get our Champions League campaign back on track and to do that we are going to need a big performance."

Liverpool have gone to Spain without Spain striker Fernando Torres, who has failed to shake off a calf injury and is now being nursed through the week in preparation for Sunday's visit of Barclays Premier League leaders Arsenal to Anfield.

Full-back Alvaro Arbeloa was also ruled out with a thigh injury, while Daniel Agger has not fully recovered from a broken metatarsal.

But midfield playmaker Xabi Alonso was on board, having recovered from a similar injury, and could well play against the Turks, who won at Trabzonspor to move to second in their league last weekend.

Benitez knows how vital a victory on Wednesday is, saying: "We have to win, we need three points after losing to Marseille and only drawing in Porto.

"The players know how important this game is, I will be expecting good performances from senior players."

Without Torres, Liverpool are likely to stick with a front pairing of Andriy Voronin and Dirk Kuyt.

In defence, Benitez has added reserve skipper Jack Hobbs to the party, but the youngster is only involved as cover for Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia.
