Lighting / Backdrops???

Need to buy lightning for video shoots. Anyone has any clue what to get, where and for how much?

School is going into video broadcasting. We've got some DV cams but we need lighting... any ideas?

Also, where do I purchase backdrops (coloured mattes) from? How much would they cost?

The portable stands cost $260!!!
