Anyway, I do not like and have never like the AFS 18-200 VR lens,
based on
Price to Durability
Price to Usefulness
Price to whatever Ratio .......

I just couldn't justify to buy this lens.

why need to justify by pricing it ?

18-200mm is a good range ... all in one ...
like when u get hitched; u get your hubby, your in-laws too, etc

IMHO if a lens has more bells and whistles, there is greater chance more things can go wrong. However we should balance this with how the bells and whistles help in your photography - allow you to make pics easier. It is a tough balance to strike. We should all know your problem is experienced by everyone who buys big ticket items such as cars, computers, hi-fis etc.

MY nikon 16-85mm VR SWM lasted only 2 weeks!!!
I was using it for a wedding shoot, Suddenly,,,, the zoom gets jammed!
When I look through the viewfinder, it vibrates before it gets the focusing!!

You say le... Unlucky or what!

They going to do a new exchange.

Your 2 and half years sound OK.
It seems like Nikon VR is not as reliable as CXXXX.

I don't have this lens but under mine (the opposite side of the Nikkor gold letters), there is a number enclosed by a recycling mark. According to KRW, this is the expected life of the lens.

Please do show me the article...

would love to read wat he said... :bsmilie:

Pls let us know more on this. Thanks.

:dunno:

KRW tells you on his website not to believe everything he writes... (check his about page)
"I like to make things up and stretch the truth if they make an article more fun"
"there are many deliberate gaffes, practical jokes and downright foolish and made-up things lurking"

This is what Nikon has to say about the symbol

IMHO, the 18-200 VR is generally not regarded as a pro-grade lens -- it is designed for convenience, reasonable cost, etc. Just like the other kit lenses, there's too much plastic components in there.

I'm sure Nikon knows how to make lenses that last longer, but question is whether you are willing to pay for the better build quality. The ultimate in build quality I've come across for the F mount are the Zeiss ZF lenses. They are so simple -- zero electronics, let alone VR -- and the body is solid metal, you can use it to wallop someone if he tries to rob you of your camera.

Thanks... was wondering about that symbol for this whole morning... :bsmilie:

The symbol is a China Restriction of Hazardous Substances symbol, and the number enclosed in the symbol means, in years, this:
“the term during which toxic and hazardous substances
or elements contained in electronic information products
will not leak out or mutate, thus eliminating the possibility
of serious environmental pollution resulting from the use
by users of electronic information products or serious
harm to their persons and properties resulting from such
use.”

probably had a bad specimen.

my 16-85 has been with me since release on market till now. after close to 9k shots, still the same

It is touch and go.
I have shot Canon, Nikon and Olympus systems. So far, never had to visit the Nikon repair centre, but Canon lenses and and Oly flash broke down on me.
Have the 18-200mm for 2 years+ now, hope it stays healthy.

I dropped my 18-200mm VR from waist height onto the floor when it slipped out of my backpack, which I inadvertently forgot to zip up. The impact broke my lens hood but there was absolutely no problem with the lens itself. I have been using the lens after as usual and never even thought about sending it for a check as I couldn't find anything wrong with it.

Generally, I have a lot of faith in Nikkor lenses. I have numerous lenses including some manual Ais, some D series, some G series and some with VR and have never encountered a single problem over the past 25 years. During these times, I had two lenses that failed on me, a Sigma and a Tamron.
