i think the "P" and other auto mode is probably the most hard to use... (of course not talking about snapshot) as in hard to get in control for what was intented...
but it really has to depend on wat was needed to achieve, if a press photographer's job is to do record shoots, there's nothing wrong with 'P' mode high asa burst shots all the way, at the end of the day, he hand the CF card back office, at the end of the month, his office bank a figure to his account.. well, he's professional..

I use a FM2, so, manual mode always.
I'm new to digital photography. I've got a 20d, paid very good money for it and it has many features. For events, like dinners, weddings, etc. I tend to use P mode as it takes alot of guesswork away. I just like taking casual snapshots and I leave it to the pro photog present to capture all the serious, must have shots. I love having fun with my camera and enjoy whatever features it has to offer me.
However, for serious shots like studio work, then I go to M. For outdoor creative shots like macro, I go for A or Tv mode.

I do not really know which to vote for. I happened to fall in a few of your listed categories and I had a hard time deciding. I happened to be making money out of photography cos I am a full-time photographer, I also happened to shoot manual exposure 99.9% of the time although I tend to rely on auto-focus 99.9% of the time I shoot, and I also happened to suffer mood swing lately when I got into full-time photography so much so that even with the most perfect of weather I am sitting at home.
The survey should let you answer multiple options.
I use my camera in auto mode most of the time as I'm 'too lazy' to bother with the manual/semi manual modes when I 'just want to take the shot'. The automatics get it right most of the time, more often than I do.
I only use the other modes if the lighting is confusing the automatics or simply outside it's capablity (i.e a night shot), or there is a specific effect i'm after.
I simply wouldn't waste time trying to use manual on every shot I took. I might has well go back to using my Russian Lecia clone if I want the 'full manual' 'no ghost in the machine' experience.

I use P model most of the time. Becos the camera is faster and often smarter than us. That is for most of the situations. In rare situation, when we have very unusual lighting condition, then, got to try other ways, A or S or M combined with some exp compensation to get it right. With digital, it's so easy to check.
