lenses with good bokeh...

I believe he's carrying two bodies with two different lenses so he doesn't have to swap lenses and miss a shot, more than for back up purposes. The back up body is probably stowed in his bag.

yup, there is another reason as well.

hmm..

just got tasked by a friend to cover a new year eve countdown party...

does the 17-35L cut it? or the 25-75L is better?

but hor... the price of the tamron does seem more attractive..:D

canon makes 16-35mm, 24-85mm & 24-70mm. You might refering to either of these lenses.

The king of bokeh...50mm f/1.0L. In fact, the 400mm f/2.8L is very impressive too.
And upcoming 800 f/5.6L must have a killer bokeh too. Then you just need to get a walkie-talkie to speak to you models from over 50 meters distance :bsmilie:

haha... sorry sorry... was referring to the 17-35L and the 24-70L..

coz i realised that tamron lenses gave a more saturated colour feel?
i don know if the other parties' lenses had images that tend to be soft...

so wad you think? shd i go ahead with canon or go with the third parties?

and what brand is ok for a 400D ahz?

thanks dudes:D

Depends a lot on your budget, and what you're looking to shoot. but i really don't understand why you want to get a 16-35L on your 1.6x crop. if its just for bokeh, then why not get a 35mm f/2 or 85mm f/1.8? these are very affordable canon made prime lens that give excellent bokeh. to cover your friend's new year's eve party, you don't really need a 16-35L or 24-70L, IMO your current 17-85 and 50mm prime would be enough. if you're worried about low lighting at parties, why not get a flash instead.

or if you die die must get a fast lens, then i suggest the tamron 17-50 f/2.8

saturation and all, can be done by post processing. what's important is getting a lens that is sharp and fast enough for your needs.

buy canon if u have no budget. Canon products are expensive but their image qualitie sure is gd esp the L lens series.

:bsmilie: Yeah....imagine if u're using 1200mm.

Actually gd bokeh doesn't only count on large apertures, tele lenses used when taking subjects at closer range will also display gd bokeh.

I've used Tamrons before and i find the saturation of colour is not that gd. Even their SP series of lenses are no match for Canon's L series. Likewise if compared Canon's L series to Leica lenses, Leicas are still the ultimate to me.

hmmm.. coz my 17-85 hunts alot at low light...
so i was thinking of using a prime or a 24-70L to replace it..

btw, does the L lenses really make a huge difference in the sharpness of the pics?
does the diff varies huge?

thanks gents..

Primes and zooms have different usages altogether so the decision is yours.

FYI, sharpness in lenses such as Canon's non-Ls and Ls are the same (other than lower-end zooms). Prime lenses IMO are always sharper than zooms. The main difference between Ls and non-Ls are simply the colour gradient and contrast.

If u really do matter a lot about sharpness and have enough cash to spare, get a L prime.

Yeah. IMO, your 17-85 is still ok at low light since it has IS. but a prime would definitely serve your purposes better. Especially if you want fast focusing.

but that is an issue also i guess..

coz i like a zoom lens coz i will be able to play ard with the distance... a prime can't..

that is partially an issue...

guess being a newbie now, gives me loads of rooms to learn from..
ha..

When covering your friend's new year's eve party, I think you will be needing a flash over a fast lens, as even an f/2.8 lens will not cut it in low light, not for any fast action anyway.

yah... i'm using a 430EX...
but just got some issues with it... don really understand why it doesn't fires at certain shots..

tot a flash would work once it's attached to the cam..

think need to bring to CSC...

Hmm. Sometimes the flash needs to recharge between shots, rapid firing overheats the flash also...

I'm really an idiot when it comes to flash so I can't say much. But a good flash would be more useful than a fast lens for this sorta thing that you need to do. Think your flash plus 17-85 IS would be ok to cover your friend's party. You have wide angle to short-tele covered.

hmmmm... that is a good point...

now i thinking if i shd invest 1st? or go rent one and try:D

die.... ahaha... drop in the BBB virus liaoz...:P

Go rent one and try la. In fact you don't even have to buy a new flash to replace your 430EX...just rent one, help your friend cover the event and then return it. That way you save money, get to try out the equipment to see if you really really need it.

For example, my friend wanted to sell me his CP filter, but after borrowing it and trying it out for a weekend i realised I didn't really need it although it was a fun piece of equipment to have around. Sure, it might have been an inexpensive second-hand polarizer, but no point getting things you don't need.

:bsmilie: Yeah....imagine if u're using 1200mm.

Actually gd bokeh doesn't only count on large apertures, tele lenses used when taking subjects at closer range will also display gd bokeh.

telephoto lens with large aperture value above f/4 would cause the background to blur, so large aperture is so critical for telephoto lens to achieve gd background blur.

sometimes, my 430ex doesn't fire @ certain shots, because the flash is charging not fast enough, or slowly, or when i am using energizer batteries. Using gd rechargable batteries, i have no such problems.

are you in such conditions as me?
