Lenses for travel photography

Amongst the modern Nikon zooms, this AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED seems a very useful focal range on FX (plus VR!).

However, it's one of those lens which does not have a consensus. Almost everyone in every different forums I've briefed through so far throws me a 50-50. Could it be sample variation?

If only Nikon comes out (quick!) with a generic range f/4 zoom.
24-85mm f/4 VR
28-105mm f/4 VR

when you see the prices increases, then the lenses may come in.
