i have a tokina 28-80 f2.8 already.

thinking of getting a zoom lense with marco but now seeing so many comment on the 90mm macro making me confused
hmm... since you already have lens cover 80mm range. Then it would be duplicate range coverage with the Tamron 90mm f/2.8. In that case, Sigma 70-300mm should be a choice then. YOu have range from 28mm-300mm, should have lots of shooting opportunity ;)

You may consider to get a uniplus extension tube to turn your tokina 28-80 lens for macro use. :think:

cheers!

sorry but how does the tube do? like that can do macro already?

I am considering to buy a few lense and flash but would like your commend on it. Or if there is a better option.

these are so-so
Sigma EF-500 DG
Canon 50mm f2.5 Marco

i wont touch any of these. You will live to regret it. :nono:
Canon 50mm f1.8 II
Sigma 70-300 APO super Marco
Tamron 100-300 Marco

Even if you lose range, dont get anything but the best. The lens affects your pic more than the camera itself. Buy the best that you can afford. That said, i suggest you just get 1-2 lenses. Get the good ones. :thumbsup:

->17-40 4L
->70-200 4L
->85 1.8
->135 2L
->200 2.8

just pick from those above. You cant really go wrong and i listed those more or less in your budget. For macro, forget about the so-called "macro zooms" all gimmicks. look for the 100/2.8 or 180/3.5L (ex) at least.

Personally, i will go for the 17-40 + 35L + 85/1.8 and perhaps the 135/2 and call it a day.

I think we shld not sway someone from buying something he is already considering.

like 35mm F2 and the list of Ls and other lenses...

I think not many have lived to regret getting the 50mm 1.8.

maybe allenng has a budget set and a purpose which he has stated, the least we cld do for him is not to confuse him by OTing.

Between the tamron 90mm and the 70300zoom my opinion get the zoom if you are starting out in photography. If you really want a dedicated lens for macros get the 90mm of course. As for ST_sg, not to pick a fight, I don't think 2.8 is very useful for macros due to the lack of DOF, I use like 16 - 22? I would think it would be good as it is easier to manual focus, but that's abt it.

There are reviews of the sigma 70 300 on clubsnap, taking a look at them wld help alot actually.

thanks moo blues
thanks for understanding.

be the f4 man:
17-40L and 70-200L

this is quite a common combo for price, image quality, weight amongs canon dslr (1.6FLM) users

hhmm... depends alot on what u shoot...

the lens that u mentioned covers a good range but try to consider a wide-angle one like the 15 or 17 from sigma, tamron or canon.
if u wanna experiment with macro, can consider the 50mm macro from sigma too.

get value-for-money ones first, then shoot like u never shot before, until u know what u like to shoot then upgrade... the money u lose when u upgrade is the same as the money u lose when u downgrade, trust me...
no point getting a 70-200L when in the end u realise that u dont shoot street or shows and only use it occasionally for once-a-year events and the rest of the 364 days its in the dry cabinet. no matter how people say about the great resale-value of Ls, u are still gonna lose between $200-$400 at least when u sell them.

i am using 10d too... i only have the 550ex, 17-40f4 and 50f1.4... and its more than enuff for me coz i never shoot street or fashion shows...

he meant when using f2.8 for macro, u'll have very shallow DOF.
using f16-f22 is better as the whole subject (say a dragonfly) will be sharply in focus.

but so will everything else around the dragonfly... then how to bring out the dragonfly from the background?

The DOF when using f16-22 will be just alright, the background should still remain OOF. This is due to the longer focal length and the closeness of the subject to the lens itself.
