Let me know if you have the antidote/antivirus etc.. ;p

:bsmilie: I also wish someone can find the cure soon cos i just bought an 88L Digicab, tianya filters full set, monopod, lens bags, now thinkin of 17-55mm...arrgh!:faint:

Lolz... Agree... also got this itchy BBB virus under my wallet....

think to buy 70-300 (or any other like 80-400, 150-500, 100-300) to accompany my kit lens when I am traveling (since usually can not move freely, zoom range become more and more important), all-around lens (28-300, 18-200, 18-270) for traveling because sometimes you are in a state where changing lens is impossible, and then need 70/80-200 f2.8 and other f2.8 to get a good action photo and indoor (I get a family event next year that is big and indoor, so need to get these lenses), also need some 'good' UWA lens for scenery because always traveling to country that has amazing scenery... and then... the list will go on and on and on....

but at the end i do not buy anything, since I think I do not need them that much.
Tele-zoom is good for my traveling but then I do not feel that I lost any 'excellent' moments so far... so skip the idea until I need it for very specific reason
All-around is convenience but then the IQ is not that good (usually), so until I get the condition 'only 1 cam 1 lens is permitted', then will skip this option
f/2.8 is excellent, I think I will end up using this range a lot, but then, there is no important event until next year, so skip it for this moment
UWA is fantastic for scenery, but feel that maybe 18mm from kit is not that bad

but still have some eyes on BnS subforum... hoping to get any lobang... hahaha...

Haha, this is an interesting thread. some have watched the dtowntv (nikon), what lens to buy next? just like what fish to eat next week?

i think everything comes down to budget. after you have decide what kind of photography you want to go into, then you invest your money in the lens you want. really wouldn't want you to buy the lens, use a couple of months then sell and this goes on and on.

18-105mm is a sweet outdoor lens coupled with the VR, you could take some kinda kids sports day at wide or zoom to 105mm for some close up shots. f/2.8 lens are more for specialize use if you shoot alot low light w/o flash and it's all depends on your budget and how you play with it.

Like what everyone said, don't get infested by the buy buy buy virus. haha, all the best!

can't really resist the 17-55mm, isn't it? considered it's really heavy and carrying it around as a walkabout, argh.. i would rather switch mine to 18-55mm (lightweight) instead. haha, cheers

Yes, the reason I'm lookin at this 17-55mm lens is more for night or indoor use like children party, events, so my walkabout wil still be 18-105 with T11-16 for that odd landscape scene. Am seriously lookin at the new Tammy 17-50VC as a lighter cheaper alternative:embrass:

Thanks for all the replies and recommendations here.

I would like to do street photgraphy but have yet to try out with the kit lens. would that be sufficient?

I am also usually the 'photographer' for friends gathering, dinner or outing. So i was thinking what lens would be good for such indoor events?

I have found the limitation of the kit lens, that's the zoom. But having using it for just one outdoor event where zoom is a must, I am not sure if I am judging too early.

I have a 50mm f/1.4 AFS for indoors. This little baby rocks! It loves low light conditions and it's perfect for indoors (even with no flash).

If you want non-intrusive street photography, 70-300 is good.

Both will cost less than 17-55 and you get a very good bargain. ;)

When I visited HK & Macau during May, almost 80% of my street shots were taken with the kit lens, including night scenes on a tripod. Photos were fantastic and very sharp. I do carry with me the Toki 11-16(bought in HK) for that odd shot to 'get it all in' kind of picture.

I was at a birthday party on Sat in the restaurant & was the 'unofficial photographer' and I again used the kit lens to good use. For the group phto I had to bring out the Toki11-16mm to get all 80pax in the tight room within the photo and for the f2.8 to work magic, of course with the help of a SB400. I was also testing out the Tamron 28-75mmf2.8 to capture some ambient light mood but did not perform well so eventually had to use flash. Did better with the 50f1.4 for ambient light.

Yes, to answer your question the kit is superb and for indoor use flash OR can try to acquire a f2.8 lens or go for the 35mmf1.8(<$400) or 50f1.8(<$200)

Thanks for ur comments and advice. Looks like I have to try out the kit lens and decide what other lens to go along with it.

Just like u said i think a f2.8 or f1.8 or even f1.4(if there is sure a lens) short range lens would be good.

Am also considering the 70-300mm lens for its zoom.

Btw, what other brands of lens could i get besides Nikkor lens? I heard that it's price it's pretty steep. Have hear some fellow members here mention Sigma, Tarmron etc. In terms of quality, which other brands can i look for?

Quite interesting that you did not include any Tamron here, any particular reason? I also hv the tammy28-75f2.8:lovegrin:

I'm probably bias in my view, my last Tammy was a 70-210mm f/3.8-4.5 (or something like that) in 1984, sold in 1985. In between I looked at an ancient Tammy 70-300mm, as well as the 10-22mm maybe 3-4 years ago. The builts were crap, since I am a certified N-nut I could not get them.

But I found the S10-20 and the Tok10-17 FE adequate in built, and budget was an issue in one case, and in the other I have a lens port (underwater stuff) that fits the Tok and not the N10.5.

Let me see... you don't shoot weddings... ;p

Anyway, bottomline is you know best what you're shooting and what you need. If there is indeed a one-lens-fits-all solution, the makers won't be coming up with so many different lenses. ;p

Yes I no longer shoot weddings. That said, I did weddings with Ai 28mm f/2.8, AiS 50mm f/1.4 and AiS 105mm f/2.5 (later AF 85mm f/1.8) with FE2 (and FM as backup), later F-801 (then F-801s) with FE2 as bu. Quite a while ago.

Well said, only you know what your shooting style is and what's the upgrade, but didn't I say I am a nay sayer for superzoom and f/2.8 pro lenses?

My day-to-day is probably done with a 18-105VR or 18-70; and depending on application I could be carrying Tok10-17FE, S10-20, N35/1.8, N35/2, N50/1.8, N60/2.8, N105/2.8 (both AFS and AFD), 70-300ED, Tok400/5.6(MF), and a variety of Pre-Ai, Ai, and AiS lenses.

That's the effect of BBB virus over 25 years.

For gathering, dinner or outing 18-105VR is more than adequate. Get yourself a SB-600 or SB-900.

Then the lenses to consider would be 70-300VR or 80-200ED or 70-200VR. Or get 70-300ED second hand or go supercheap get 70-300G (quite a crap lens, though).

:bsmilie: in the 2 short yrs after infected by the BBB virus I've acquired almost 10 lenses so I cannot imagine at 25yrs...

Well, 70-300G is only abt $200 bucks for a tele-zoom so dun expect too much. It is ok in daytime use though but really is CRAP for F1;(

LOL:bsmilie: Let me poison you a little more. Tamron 17-50/2.8 VC is starting to be sold in SG at around 800 I heard. how lidat? It is cheaper than you first expected. So far, I am very very happy with my non VC. It is my default lens now.

No, no , no, I've been callin all over since yesterday until now but not in stores yet. There are many version of prices from $800-$1200:eek: What to do liao:confused::gbounce::kok:

One way to minimise (but not cure) the BBB virus is not to visit CS B&S.

actually, u shouldn't even visit CS forum also...cos the poison is creeping everywhere

(

If there is any consolation, my last 2 years' acquisition: AFD 60mm, AFS 60mm, AFS 18-105mm, AFD 50mm f/1.8, AFS 105mm VR, Tokina 10-17mm Fisheye, AFD 105mm (yup you read right), AFS 35mm f/1.8G. During the same time, sold AF 50mm f/1.4, AFD 60mm and AFS 18-135mm.

Highest rate of acquisition in the past 25 years!

Yiaks, only bought 8 lenses (and sold 3)... Aiya lost to you... Your infection more severe! :sweatsm:

To keep this (barely) IT (in topic), here's the advise to newbies looking for upgrades: either (1) don't upgrade - it is the road of no return, after upgrade there is more upgrade! (2) upgrade but refrain from asking for advise - research what you need, and let no one influence you on what to buy. :nono:
