Lens to invest

HI guys, i am currently using a sony A7ii with a 28mm lens, thinking to get into mostly portrait and events kind of shoot. I am not too sure if i should get a 55mm f1.8 or the up coming 24-105 f4 lens or save up to get the 24-70GM lens(in which i will need to save up damn long), i have heard very nice reviews on the 55mm thus i am having my dilemma.

1) You spent money, you don't invest. (Investment is something you do if you run photography as a business.)
2) Don't overspent if it just a hobby. Keep in mind that there's more equipment you might require (flash, reflectors, filters...).
3) Don't sweat over fancy lenses. (Very few people can really tell which lens you were using.) Let the picture speak, not the equipment.
4) Read up about the typical lenses used in these areas and genres. Do keep in mind the specific conditions (e.g.: time to change lenses vs nailing the shot / moment)
5) If unsure, rent the lens and spend a weekend with it. That's usually more enlightening than hundred pages of specs and reviews by other people.

Hi Octarine, thank you for your advice! i do intend to go into photography business next time but..haha as currently i am already in my 30s, i guess is harder but i will take note and rent out the lens first to see how it goes.

if you're planning to go into photography as a sideline, in all likelyhood a 24-70 is quite necessary.

however, the lenses that you've listed are the pretty pricey ones, of which Sony has the lower-priced alternatives such as the f1.8/50 instead of the FE 1.8/55. instead of the GM f2.8/24-70, look at the Zeiss f4/24-70 which suits the need better.

when i'm not making coffee behind a counter, i'm taking event photos as a sideline. and really, noone's asked what lenses i've used either. it's up to how comfortable you are with your equipment and focal length.

my sempai even uses his A7R2 with legacy manual focus lenses dating from the 70s to 90s to shoot events. if you want more information, you can join the international A7 group which he heads https://www.facebook.com/groups/A7ShootersInternational/
