Lens to bring for NDP

1) Where are you going to be position?
2) What are you going to shoot (eg. Firework, parade, portrait of the performer, portrait of the people, etc)?
3) How are you going to frame your pic - focusing only on firework? Focusing on firework with the MBS in the background?

All of the above questions needed to be answered before you would know what lens to bring. But... you could bring both lenses with you just in case. Remember to bring a sturdy tripod too... however if you are in the passenger stands, I am not sure if you could deploy your tripod.

1) green sector seat
2) fireworks , parade
3) most likely firework with MBS and floating platform

Fireworks photography works best with a wide angle lens. A tripod (or at the very least, a monopod) would be very helpful, if not essential. The parade can be shot with your general purpose 24-105 lens or with the telephoto 70-300 lens. It depends on how close you are to the parade and whether you wish to focus more closely on the parade participants (70-300) or take wider shots of the parade (24-105).

Won tix last year. Space is tight to set up tripod unless u in first row. Also crowd stands up and sits at key moments so i ended up better to handhold camera.

Ultimately dont forget to soak in atmosphere and enjoy experience.

for tripods to shoot fireworks, i think its best to do it just outside the stadium during one of the other rehersals. Don't think it is safe to deploy the tripod inside as it can get really crowded and rowdy (so much so that you might not be even able to even open the tripod legs fully) without hitting others or others hitting you. :bsmilie:

I have emailed the NDP committee asking them specifically whether I am able to bring my DSLR and Tripod to the NDP and received a reply from them... yes I am able to bring my camera equipment to the NDP. However, judging from those that had replied, the place is going to be very crowded and so deploying the tripod is not going to be easy... plus (in my opinion) it will be pretty irresponsible and anti-social to set up your big tripod in a tight place and making others uncomfortable. So I would highly advise against it...

I have attended one of the fireworks shows some years ago, sitting on the grand stand and I found plenty of space to deploy a tripod without any issue for myself or others. There are two options: small deployment just in front of your seat (only using one segment of your tripod legs) or deployment in front of the sitting people, but left or right in the corners, close to the railing.
Since everybody will look up for the firework the cameras on tripod will not disturb anybody.
You can go down now, when the grandstand is unused and try different angles from the seat you will have.

I'm one of the NSFs doing multimedia LED screen content for this year's NDP. There's no issue with a small travel tripod with one leg extended out, but please only deploy the tripod once the show segment starts (7pm and later) because there will be people running about during pre-parade and parade & ceremony. This isn't an official statement, just a suggestion from a fellow photog :)

Green sector isn't very ideal for fireworks framing because the floating fireworks platform is on stage right, while you're seated stage left. Probably won't be able to get just MBS + fireworks in frame. I suggest a change of location to the esplanade or merlion area for fireworks shooting during rehearsals.

from spectator stands if I wish to shoot close up of parade contingents, how long will I need? up to 400mm or 300mm will suffice? thinking of either a 100-400mm or a 300 f4 IS L... 200-400L don't know where to rent...

Rent the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS. And get a kenko 1.4x TC just in case. This lens had a larger aperture and with the 1.4x TC, it is still quite fast.

I don't have tickets, but by experience shooting from outside, almost every lens have a "purpose"

1) Telezoom (with extender better) - Planes, Helis, Speed Boat display, Salute Cannon
2) Medium Zoom, UWA, - National Flag/Chinook, Salute Canon, Plane Salute (5 planes spreading out)

For Fireworks
UWA -Esplanade, MBS (closer to helix), Merlion Park
Medium - Near NTUC building

you can see from my blog

the photos link to my Flickr and most of them you can find my settings there.

Bring the bazooka Sigma 50-500mm. Everything settled into one single lens. Lol

Ifvthe canon 28-300L is too costly n heavy, try the tamron 28-300. It costs abt $9xx and has vibration compensation as well
