As for picture quality, it's hard to compare since the focal ranges only overlap at exactly 55mm.

Read the reviews of the lenses in the links that were already provided to you, and learn for yourself.

28-135 is not wide enough on a crop body so I would not recommend that.

I'm blur on this wide angle term, I have check the Canon Lens Work III book and in the book it's classify a EF 35mm f/2 as wide angle lens. So if an 35mm consider a wide andgle lense, why would an 28mm not wide enough. I am not questioning/agues what you said, just that I am puzzled by the term, hope u understand. hope u can enlighten me on this kind of noob question.

1) What is an wide angle lens? what distance can consider wide angle?

2) Does that mean zoom out all the way to get the more view into the picture on the left and right side is consider an wide angle photographing?

3) wide angle lens with smaller focus lenght also mean that it's can more image into the photo but at a small scale?

Camera lens have what they call an angle of view, which is the limit within which the subject can be captured in accordance with the focal length. i.e. The wider the angle of view, the more things (in front of the camera) can be captured.

For prime lens, anything with diagonal angle of view of more than 50degrees is consider WA.

First, I am using a Canon EOS 1000D with the kit lens (18-55mm IS), and I have bought the 55-250mm IS and 50mm f/1.8. I find this combination very versatile and pretty good for beginners. The reach using the two zooms combine for a good reach (18-250mm) which can be used for nearly any situation. The 50mm f/1.8 gives you some low-light ability.

Next, as for the 55-250mm USM and IS differences:
The USM one is older, non-IS, is EF (can be used on APS-C crop and full frame) It is considered an inferior lens with mediocre image quailty.
The IS one is very new (released in 2007), is EF-S (Can only be used on APS-C crop) It has good image quality for its price, and I personally find it a excellent beginner telephoto zoom.

The 15-85 also has USM and IS. The shop might want to clear his old stock and tell you to buy the 17-85. If you want your camera to shoot at a wider angle, you should get 17mm or lower. If you prefer the range between 18-135mm, Canon do have this lens and it is within your budget. You should read up the reviews first before you get the lens.

Nope the 55-200, I think its because I was looking at MK II prices instead of the MK I. The reviews for the 55-200 MK II are generally not great so its not a very popular lens, not sure about the MK I.

I don't think popularity would affect whether the reviews are good or not The optical and build quality are poor hence the poor reviews. Considering that this review is for the MK II, I can hardly imagine the much cheaper MK I be any better. Still... Reviews are reviews, if you can get to try it, who knows - you might like what you see.

Hi all, i am new to photograph and this clubsnap. I own an canon 500d with EF18-55 IS kit lens and recently (2days) brought a efs 50mm f/1.8 II.

Would like to seek advise on the lens suitable for holiday. Budget below $1k, anything from 17-135mm with normal f/stop like 4-5.6 for example. Will like to do photoshot of ppl n background during holiday.

Are considering canon lens(kindly give me some suggestion pls), best with IS because i want to take night shot and prolly equip myself with a tripod. Am i able to get an L lens with my budget?
