[ Lens Review ] - 12-50mm for Macro !!

I don't get it, what is the problem? just consider 12mm as extra, if you guys want to shoot for group portraits can always zoom in to minimize the distortion.

Its obvious you dun get the discussion. We are not complaining abt the extra width. We r just discussing how 12 mm does for group portraits.

There is no problem, just the pros and cons of wide angle with portraits shots, group portraits to be exact. It's the same argument with even UWA on portraits shot, some people will argue the distortion, some people like how they can use the distortion to their advantage and make the portrait shot creative looking. So, there is no problem, just some suggestions and opinions and stuff...

oh then it's obviously off topic, isn't it?

that's really someone preferences, no point of arguing which is better, IMO. The lens has 12mm wide, so if you don't like the focal length, can always zoom in, or don't get this lens. That's what I was trying to say.

Nope. If you said that, it's obvious you do not know wat off topic is.

Now.... If we start discussing wat off topic is, then that is off topic. Discussing the utility of the 12 mm end of the 12-50 lens, is not.

Don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say I don't like this kind of length. In fact, I have use 9mm to take a group photo of about 40 people with nice background. And the folks all love the shot, believe it or not, the distortion was very minimum because I didn't tilted the camera.

My point is, we are just giving our suggestions and point of view for group portrait with wide angle.

At times, in order to get everything in the photo, you'll need the 12mm.
At those times, I'm happy I've that little option to go wider.
Those are the times where you don't really care about distortion, neither will your audience.

I want to emphasis that the 12-50mm is an outdoor lens and as a walkaround lens it's fantastic.

Under low light, you must switch lens. I was at a BBQ night party the other day and was shooting with the 12mm f/2 lens at 1/30s ISO1600. With the 12-50mm, that would mean shooting at ISO6400.

Even for macro, you also need relatively good light, The aperture starts at f/6 for macro.

12mm f2 at ISO1600 : with 12-50mm lens at 12mm it is at f3.5. how you would end up at ISO6400 ??
for macro does not matter, we never shot f6 anyway, normally f11 and above for m4/3 system.

F11 is a lot. Thats near the envelope of m4/3 lens isnt it? I tot the sweet spot is abt 4-5.6? Not picking a fight but just wondering.

it is not sweet spot, but I find that even f8 the DOF is too shallow. based on experience shooting at f11 and above with 45-200mm with +10 close up filter

Ok. I understand. U really do need dof for macro. The closer u get the thinner the dof. A lot of macro do suffer from inadequate dof.

f3.5 is almost two stops slower than f2, so the ISO is not two stops higher?

OK...12 mm is OK for group shots. Just shot an event yesterday and I actually preferred the shots from the 12-60 versus the 14-54 Mark II. The main reason was the exposure. For some reason, colours and exposure turned out better on the 12-60. There is distortion, but it can be managed by the photographer. Looking forward to the 12-50. I think it would be a sweet lens to shoot events.

Isn't it a bit risky to use the 12-50mm to shoot events? You can't really predict the lighting conditions.

No need to predict what. Just always assume that it will be bad. Hahaha!
