Lens recommendations

Hello. I'm new to ClubSNAP and to DSLR photography. I look forward to learning from all of you! :)

I have a Canon 550D with a 18-135mm lens. I understand from what i've read so far that since my camera is not a full frame camera, it means my effective lens angle range is 28mm to 180mm.

Does it mean that if I were to use a 50mm prime lens, what I get is 50mm x 1.6 = 80mm? Which means I need to get a Canon EF 28mm 2.8 in order to get 'closest' to a 50mm lens?

I hope I'm not asking a repeat question... Thanks for your help in advance!

Thanks daredevil123 for the recos.

For starters may go in for a wide angle to complement the 18-135mm (which is good lens too), just a little itchy to have more zoom.

PC lens would probably end up last on my shopping list. (zerocoolAstra thanks for the clarification) I was lost with the jargon too ;p

Is there a big difference in using non Canon lenses? I seen some really good lenses from Sigma, Tamron & Tokina but never used them. Stuck with Canon and Nikon (on the older camers) so far.

Why not rent some lenses and go shoot what you like? Be it street, landscape and see if you like the weight, size and the image quality.
