No, it's not. The original purpose of an UV filter is to block light of UV wavelength from entering your lens. Some beginners use it because they got scared by some other epople's stories, myth and whatever, some professionals use it because they like it, some other think it increases the resale value .. whatever rocks your boat. Ultimately it's redundant for taking a good pictures here near the equator. The UV blocking is something that is rather needed at higher altitudes and it was necessary during film era. It's like you walking around the hole day using clear glass spectacles without correction. In certain situations it can cause reflections, if you want to use sunglasses you need to take them off.
