btw do different dslr brands have a specific mount for lens hood? can a canon lens hood be attached to minolta lenses?

I don't think so, Minolta lens uses click-on hood(not quite good), I don't think I can use my sony hood on it.

The screw-in type is compatible among the brands, as long as thread size is the same. Clip-on type is unlikely to be compatible.

The bayonet type that we currently use is the best design by far I feel... it's easy to remove and take off and doesn't get jammed easily... I haven't seen screw-on types though... are they screwed on like filters? If so, there's the danger that they would get stuck like filters... also if you drop the lens or camera with the hood attached, you'll be looking at a very expensive repair....
