Lens fungus on Yashica Electro RF

the black blocks are the rubber wrench to remove the front bezel of the lenses.
needs to be suitable for the size of the lens to be repaired.

this is very useful stuff, where did you get that?

currently I use plastic film canister + tape to remove front bezel

Off topic. But since we're on the DIY lens repair tak now, has anyone tried shimming FSU lens to work with Leica before?

Yes for the 85mm (J9? I can't remember now) I think. Which are you thinking about?

I have a J8(50mm). Thinking of pairing it up with an M3 or maybe just a Bessa R2M. The FSU rangefinders are fine, but the lack of frame lines with parallax error compensation is quite frustrating for me because I like to print full frame

The last time I didn't have anything, so I used a rubber doorstop!!

I could use my J8 no prob on the Leica M8, only problem was that the focus was slightly off as with most FSU lenses (different flange distance I think) so I adjusted it for minimum focus where the error was most obvious (quite mild only). Problem was more obvious at minimum focus for 85mm J9. I think you can unscrew the back and check the shims.

i got them on evilbay for 4 bucks each. there is also luxury set of 5 or 6, i forgot, cost about 60 bucks, and i think they are not worth it.

- toy gun "bullet?" as vacuum tool to pick up or place back lens elements.
for some lens, need acetone to dissolved d glue use to secured the retaining ring. Can get those lady nail polish remover.

zippo fluid is a great idea! where did you get it? guess we cannot take MRT or bus after we buy it, right?

IPA will leave stain on lens elements.
cheapest zippo fluid i get so far is $2.50 from those neighbor value hardware shop. :)

OT abit..
so far my most difficult work and success on camera/lens repair is able to fix Seikosha shutter on 1950s Japanese RF. Took me many sleepless nite to figure out how to fix it..

Gd morning gents

Just realised i have two gsn rf in my dad's dry box, having sticky seals n not clear lenses...

Should i repair them? Where to get replacement light seals? How about the leatherette? A contax 137A has damn sticky fake leatherette...

Thx alot in advance :)

So good to see so many other people doing their own camera repairs too. We should have a dedicated thread!

Yah no guarantee that DIY camera repair will be successful all the time. $100-200 for repair/CLA is really worth it!

I've been really busy so I haven't had the time to check back, but I have opened up my cameras to tinker with them and I have to say, this is really fun :)

I have an existing Yashica Electro 35 GT that has a shutter problem (it doesn't open fully), and I bought another one from the same seller who sold me the GSN with fungus (which also came with a fungused lens GRRRRR) so I "transplanted" the clean lens from my old GT to the new GT, which is actually mechanically good.

Unfortunately in the course of surgery, I ended up with a problem: While the meter is still working well (shutter fires fast and slow where appropriate), the exposure lamps and battery check lights are not working now. Initially I thought it was a problem with my soldering so I re-soldered the wires I removed, and I'm sure I soldered them in the correct positions, but I haven't got the lights successfully working. The interesting thing was, right after I inserted the batteries for the first time after putting back the bottom plate, the yellow exposure lamp actually lighted up for a brief moment but refused to shine for me thereafter :( Anyone has any ideas regarding this problem?

And regarding the fungus on the GSN originally mentioned and the new GT, it had already etched into the rear elements of both the GSN and the new GT, so those glasses are as good as gone. Tried cleaning with lighter fluid, then I got desperate and submerged both glasses in clorox but still cannot save them T_T

Can't really advise you on whether you should repair them, but regarding the light seals and the leatherette:

Light seals: milly120786 | eBay (this ebay seller also sells a small selection of leatherette)
Leatherette: CameraLeather.com Custom camera leather and leatherette, Aki-Asahi Camera Coverings

If you are adventurous enough you can even browse Taobao.com for leatherette sheets :)
