anyone can recommend a lens that is good for travel, that covers from landscape to portrait with a reasonable price, actually I'm considering Nikon VR 18-200mm. CP selling $1250. I own a D70 (with kit lens) & sigma 28-200mm f5.6, but quality of pic not that good.:) :) by the way i am new to DSLR. :)
"Picture quality not so good" or "I am not so good"?

U might think better lenses will give u better pictures? Both yes and no.
Better lenses does give u better pictures. But ur skill complements and enhances the lenses that u'll be using.

U are already suited and well to go for travel photography. If ur fundamentals are not there, even trinities can't help u improve ur picture.

but can F3.5-5.6 gives that kind of good depth of field and sharpest compared 17-55 f2.8

the ans is incomparable hah.

if you dun mind changing lenses, my recommendations would be 12-24 for landscapes and the Micro 60mm 2.8 or 85mm 1.8 for potraits.

Should about cover everything and the combo is not too expensive and I have blown up pics to beyond S8R with no problems. :)

Cheers!

What's a 85 f/1.4 to you? :what: :what: Mai gei gei leh... :D

heh.. same mistake as me... i sold off my sigma 18-200 within a month. Didn't like the quality of the shots. (if you don't like the DOF on such zooms... i think you might possibly not like the nikkor either, even though it has the much vaunted VR)

Currently using a a tokina 12-24 f/4, tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and nikkor 80-200 f/2.8 combination. (kiasu. carry everywhere like chiong sua liddat)

If I were to travel... probably I would bring the 12-24 and 80-200 (even though its kind of heavy). I dunno :dunno: Different people have different preferences with regard to weight.. and also what you want to bring depends on what you expect to shoot yeah?

post some pic from yr 18-200mm VR when u back from HK;)

read some review on 18-200mm VR, I think i over estimated it, next lens in consideration is Nikon AF-S VR 70-200mm f2.8 IF-ED ~ $3800, Sigma similar APO 70-200mm f2.8 EX HSM ~ $1868... price diff ~ $1k.. really need to seriously consider B4 commiting into buying a better lens. ;p ;p

is D70 kit lens good enough ?? 18-70mm f3.5:dunno: does f-stop 2.8 makes alot of diff compared to a f3.5 ???

I believe the 18-200 is a great travel lens, without the hassle of changing lens, great for capturing the moment quickly, which I think is what it's all about, rather than the highest quality.

I was also looking at the Nikon AF-S VR 70-200mm f2.8 IF-ED for higher quality shots (more for business), but are you sure of the price of $3800 ? I thought it would be lower than that as shown in the Nikon price list guide ?

price from Nikon site, anyway i have a Sigma 18-200 DC lens, f3.5-6.3, VR is 3.5-5.6, reason considering nikon is bcoz its a VR, ;p ;p

I'd go for two, 17-35 and 70-200VR. :D ok, maybe add a 50 f/1.8 since the weight of it won't matter much after carrying two of the trinities.

Simply becos of the VR u're changing an 18-200 for an 18-200? Woah... pro man...

Actually don't think oredi, the 17-35 f/2.8 and 28-70 f/2.8 are good to go.

17-35mm + 50mm ...

although with its limitations won't break your back!

In case you don't know:

D70's/D70s' Kit lens is 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5, its a variable aperture lens. Meaning, at 18mm max aperture is f/3.5, and at 70mm max aperture is f/4.5. Probably at 50mm max aperture is f/4.3.

17-55mm f/2.8 is a fixed aperture lens, from 17mm up to 55mm, the max aperture is fixed at f/2.8.

Regards,
Arto.
