lens for travel

A tripod less than $50 may not be a good idea.

Do consider something that is more stable.
maybe a Slik 300DX or a Manfrotto 190.

guys, he will travel for his honeymoon.
one hand for camera, one hand for tripod, which hand for his wife?
light weight is what he need
try 24-120 VR or 24-135 Tamron
so 1 lens, 1 body, 2 batteries are already enough

This happened to me as well...was agreed to get the FZ20 or worst case Pro1 for my last trip.....at the end "get siao" went to test out 300D and D70.....that's it.....浪子一去不回头.....no turning back since and still Buy Buy Buy up till now

Yeah dude. One mistake I always make it to be so caught up capturing the moment on photo that I don't end up experiencing the moment.

Wind30,

congratz on your new purchase. You won't be disappointed :)

Since you already have 18-70, stick with it for the time being. Unless (1) you want to sell it & (2) you intend to increase your spending budget.

For $1k,

Like espn suggested, get a tripod. Never leave home without it. (Words from a travel photographer :p ). The manfrotto 190B is an excellent choice: not too bulky, not too heavy and inexpensive. Of course, get a ballhead to go along with you. That will probably set you back under S$400.

Other than that, get some memory cards or portable storage. The last thing s you want to happen while you are on the roads are:

(1) flat batteries
(2) out of memory

Save the rest of the moolah for future upgrades.

The lens I usually carry for my travelling are:

17-35 f2.8
50 f1.8
24-85 f3.5-4.5
80-200 f2.8
and my trusty manfrotto 190B :)

Hope it helps you.

I rather be scolded by my wife then knock myself against the wall when I see the most beautiful night sky.

That was what happened to me when I was in Sri Lanka. Eversince, my motto for travelling "Tripod: Never leave home without it" :D

Hehe I have my reasons for saying "bring tripod" I also lugged a tripod to HK for short mere 3 days, never used it but if I had to, at least I have one :)

Ask the sales people at CP, they will ask you "travelling?" BUY BUY BUY tripod.

"Better to have a tripod and not use it, then to need one, and not have it"
Saw my dream tripod at Eastgear. It's the "Feisol" (spelled correctly?), very light and sturdy @$345. Then they also have this super light ballhead (forgot the brand), best I've seen so far, going for like S$595.

Someday....

$595? sounds like Markins to me. HEhe BBB!!!

joho, great mind think alike :bsmilie:

this combi is after numerous trials, errors & lotsof sweat!

I used to lug a F5 + F90X + 28-70 f2.8 + 80-200 f2.8 + 300 f4 + 50 f1.8 + hundreds of films & batteries up a mountain. That climb almost killed me.... damn..the bag was HEAVY!

Now I stick to this combo... no point carrying to many dead weight. Or else you would be panting instead of shooting. This combo works the best for me nia

but then again... everyone different shooting style ;)

I would only carry a 17-35 and batteries + lots of storage up mountain, I won't bother bringing any other extra stuff

for the lite days, i just go with my p&s!!

on those heavy days...

heeheehee :bsmilie:

I recommend a remote control to go with the tripod. Then you can control when to trigger the cam. Cheap, cheap, only $16 to $22 only. BUY, BUY, BUY!

After reading the thread, may need to look at a new tripod liao.

thanks for the tripod recommendations. read up in tripods too. I am 180cm tall so is the manfrotto 190B too short or just nice?

how about the manfrotto 443 which is lighter. does anyone know how much more expensive the 443 is compared to 190B?

err... and which ballhead. I wish to keep the budget for ballhead and tripod under like $800. impt thing is that is must be light. This is my first trip with a DSLR and I don't want to like tire myself as I will be away for like 20 days.

Actually can get second hand right? tripod should be pretty durable.

no tripod?

I am wondering do I REALLY need a $400+ tripod?

I only have the D70 and the kit lens and they weigh ard 1kg.

surely a lighter (cheaper?) tripod is better for my trip. Is the $400+ tripod more stable for the <2kg load (D70 + kit lens) ?

I am not professional photographer.... just an amateur. A cheap tripod is MUCH MUCH better than handheld but how much more stable is the expensive tripod compared to the cheaper ones.

So my shopping list

1) tripod
2) extra battery
3) portable harddisk
4) flash ? do I need the SB600 for travel or is it just dead weight.
