Lens for D300s

Hi .....u may wish to consider this combo,

for tight budget:
Kit lens : 18-105mm/3.5~5.6 vr
Telephoto : 70-300mm/4.5~5.6 vr

for " want to see your credit limit go places where it has not gone before" :
Kit lens : 16-85mm vr OR 17-55mm/2.8
Telephoto : 70-200mm/2.8 vr

I set to ISO1000 and aperture F2.8 for this shot. The shutter speed is 1/80. No handshake problem. :thumbsup:

Seriously, the price for the 17-55 F2.8 has gone down in the B&S section. You can get a good copy from fellow forumers offloading it.

Get Nikon 18-105, its cheap, sharp, light and offers good range and VR.

It is sharper than Nikon 16-85 and 18-200 according to some reports, but it can't shoot low light, not a F2.8 lens, so it doesn't give your nice bokeh. It is good for beginner. You can get it from B&S for around $250-350. Buy a flash in case you are shooting indoor event, use the flash with F5.6 and 1/60-1/80 should gives you good depth of field for this focal length.

I will not recommend you to get Tamron 17-50 F2.8 with BIM, because my Tamron can't focus correctly on D300s. In short, get a Nikon lens for a Nikon camera.

Maybe. The parade moves. At 1/20, the pics may come out blur.
VR may help to keep your lens steady. But are your subjects moving?

This is how it was done...

Focus on the pupil of the object person. Meter on the object person for correct exposure. Have someone to stand infront of the person. Then I have a flash placed overhead of the object person poiting towards the person in front of object. On flash commander Manual mode measured to the person distance to the flash. Then upon trigger will flash onto the person infront of the object. In return will reflect on the pupil of the object person.

I was actually just trying it out and it works. Interesting to be creative...

My Tamron 17-50/2.8 non-VC with BIM has been performing very well. You probably have a piece there with back/front focusing problem.

nice. Dude, the prices is over my budget. The new one cost close to 2k and I dun think the 2nd hand at BS will much cheaper. Or wait I become pro, then I will buy this lens so for the time being, I need a learning kit

For 18-105 or 18-200.. I guess it should be possible.. But the clearity or sharpness?? Maybe dont think so due to the distance of focus to the pupil... But worth a try though..

Well.... after a few weeks of thought and research.... have narrow down the choice of lens and last night my sis told me she getting the D90 if possible she will get the twin lens(if there is) and I will pay for the 55-200 VR unless she change her mind...hehhehehehe...

So either the 18-200 and the combi 18-55 + 55-200 is no longer need for the time being.
Again, I would like to say thanks to you guys for the information and help.

Next I need to get is a WA lens, eyeing on the Tokina 11-16 / 12-24
BTW, I also need to get a external flash(speedlight). Any model to recommend or it does require to do some reading too? Most important, able to mount on both D90 + D300s.

I strongly agree with daredevil123. Good camera like D300s must pair with lens like N17-55 mm f/2.8. No doubt N18-200 mm VR lens is light and convenient to carry around , it is not suitable for low light condition, eg indoor shooting. Besides this, most of the time you will be using f/5.6 when shooting indoor if you put on N18-200 mm VR. Try to get a lens with maximum aperture f/2.8 or less. You will not regret later.

I have not tried the king of DX lens 17 - 55mm f/2.8 and would love to try this out before deciding to get one myself. However I have tried 50mm f/1.4 which is very good for indoor especially carpark shooting. I do agree D90 kit lens 18 - 105mm 3.5 - 5.6G is good enough for newbies and for those doing shoots mostly on outdoor, anyway you can get a decent 2nd hand around $300+. Can't tell you how much I want to have a photoshoot with any one of those cars.

As for the TS, I'd highly recommend the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.
But for more versatility, I think an 18-105mm will do just fine.
Personally I never really liked the 55-200mm (I have one), but that's just my personal preference.
