Lens Dilemma

I would sell the 24-105 without hesitation. I love this lens and use it as my general walk-about on my full frame, but I just don't feel comfortable with the FOV on a crop.

When I used to own a 7D, my perfect trinity included the Sigma 10-20, Canon 17-55 and the Canon 70-200 f/4 IS.

Once sold, the 24-105 can be easily bought back in B&S at any time. This is a very popular lens. So if you switch to full frame in the future, you can always purchase the 24-105 within hours.

TS, if you really can't decide than I suggest just get EF-S 55-250mm for the time being.
Once you're comfortable with this setup, you will probably give up the 24-105mm.

I've never used the 55-250 but I hear that it's very sharp. How does the bokeh compare to the 70-200 f/4L IS?

I have not used this lens yet so neither I would know. :bsmilie:

I would sell 24-105. 17-55 compliments better with 70-200. Just compare the new combo

A
10-22 + 17-55 + 70 - 200
vs
B
10-22 + 24-105 + 70 - 200

Less overlapping in A compared to B. You have f2.8 in A but none in B. If you use 10-22 + 24-105 combo often then probably 70-200 isn't too necessary if you only bring 2 lenses out only.

Alternative is consider the cheaper sigma 50-150 f2.8 to go with 17-55 f2.8. Just that no IS.

How cheap is cheap for the 50-150mm 2.8 no IS?
A second hand F4 70-200 IS is approximately 900 - 1.2k secondhand.
Selling my 24-105 may give me enough funds to top up another 200 bucks to go for the 70-200L

Though I seldom shoot low light, 17-55mm 2.8 is simply too sharp and nice for me to give up... It s just not long enough.

Why the 50-150mm no IS... get the newer version... the 50-150mm OS. I believe it is around S$13xx I think, so a second hand would be pretty affordable.

Calling the 55-250 a sharp lens is really a stretch at best. The AF is slow and noisy, corners are soft and bokeh is horrible. On the other hand sharpness is relative. What the lens offers is extra reach in a light and affordable package.

@TS:
Going FF eventually - Sell 17-55

If not - sell 24-105

Personally, sell the 24-105. Its moderately wide at 24 and f4 hardly cuts it in low light.

oops sorry... not been updated on sigma lenses.

if you want to go FF, you should noe which to sell.

in my opinion, with modern body we have now in the market, F4 at high iso of 1600 is really good enough for me.

i love 24-105mm lens very very sharp lens at wide. but my kit lens 18-55m is still my primary travelling lens. Other lens is really for my hobby usage haha

Haha great... mixed reviews. We can never say that we will NEVER intend to go full frame. Looking at how the different brands are trying to reduce the cost of entering the full frame market, who knows if we are able to get a decent full frame at $1XXX one day. The 6D's 9 AF points are really nowhere compared to the 7D's 19 point.

Beg to differ. How good your AF is was never measured by how many AF points you have. Frankly, the 6D AF points is good enough for a couple of things, especially the middle focus point whereby it had one of the best low light AF around.

Many ways to consider

FF way: sell the 7D and efs lens, get 6D and keep the 24-105. Well, a f2.8 crop lens on a crop is almost same as a f3.5 lens on a FF.
Crop way: sell the 24-105, on a crop it's 38-168, still usable but may not be wide enough for many cases. F4 FF lens on a crop is like f5.6.
Best way: sell all the zoom, get 6D and prime :D haha

I think 2nd hand 5D (mk I and II) is $1XXX and definitely quite decent...

Used 5D mk1 is below $1k. Used 6D is already almost cracking the $2k barrier.

in the past, a photo from a crop body cam can have a lot lesser detail compare to FF Body cam. But the recent crop body cam, i can see the details is not alot dif. Only different i see is the DOF. With wide range of lens we have in the market, i dun see a good crop body cannot get good photo as compare. i just comment base on normal usage, if you talking on pro level, that is a lot different, FF body definitely FTW. Correct me if i am wrong.

So is TS more confused or more enlightened? :?

Lol, thanks for asking but both enlightened as well as confused... Guess i learnt my lesson in past and always want to buy the best i can afford rather than buy something for the moment. You will always crave for a little better

You have to know what you want eventually. Even if you get the best you can afford, if it's not what you want eventually, deep in your heart/mind, you will always be thinking about the upgrade *if you can't keep the BBB virus at bay*.
