Lens creep, BIG deal??

What is your view on the above??:dunno:

Cheers...

Well, we have to accept that the lenses are mechanical products and as such they obey the laws of mechanics, which includes the gravitational effects. In short, we can't fight nature.

When the lens is designed such that it's centre of gravity shifts laterally as it focuses or as it zooms, then it will have to fight with the force of gravity one way or the other if it is tilted up or down. This effect is more pronounced with a lens that extends itself as it zooms, compared with one that remains at a constant length while zooming or focusing. The former type will always creep, whether it an expensive lens or cheap lens, it is just a matter of time. We just have to be aware that it will happen and take the necessary precautions.

Well, tat's if you limit it to Nikon users only.. :bsmilie:

But seriously... anyone shoots pointing downwards most of the time?

Sometime macro product shoot we have to point downward. :)

YMMV

It's easier with a zoom for composition. With Macro primes, esp the 60mm, it's a real P.I.T.A. to get the image in and focus correctly sometimes... this is due to the built of the lens where the elements move in and out and cause the shift in the composition...

Any prime macro or lens can do.

It is a preference and how one wants to go about the shoot and control the lighting reflect on the subject. :)

YMMV

Personally, I dislike lens that creeps. 2 situations that get on my nerves.

1) When I point my lens down in macro or product shots.
2) When I manually prefocus and point my lens up to take that fireworks in the sky.

I know some people who bought creepy 18-200 VR and put on B&S straight away, hopping to buy another good copy.

Would be great if someone's lens can creep to me ;)

Still at it? Paying so much to worry again? Sigh. You people need to learn to enjoy the equipment then worrying about it even before you use it

I always check my lens carefully during my purchase. Hard earned money. Lens are long term investment, I don't recommend play play attitude :nono: unless you got too much money to burn.:bsmilie: You don't want your lens to fail when warranty ends. Repair can be costly. ;p

Has anyone send it in for de problem yet??

is it solved??:)
As far as NSC is concerned, there isn't a way to correct the problem. i.e. as quoted from a NSC technician : "Nikon hasn't provided a way to fix this issue and due to the heavy front element, creep would be even more prominent with usage." He (the NSC technician even brought out his 18-200mm lens for me to make comparisions between NSC's and mine, i.e. noises, creep etc.. and I was convinced that mine is identical to his after coming out of NSC. :D

there're some earlier versions of the 18-200 that does not creep. dun tell me it has a different formula/method/style for manufacturing?

I'm using a Made in Japan 18-200mm (i.e. earlier version) and it does creep, thou not as much and bad (IMO) as the mad in thailand copies. Same method of fabrication. there still isn't a workaround by NSC for either versions as I was told.

spoken like a true photographer!
of all the copies i've seen, they creep. and they will creep after some usage eventually. the earlier one accepts it and gets it out of the way in his/her mind, the earlier one can begin to enjoy this lens! :D
