Hello,

I dropped my Leica a few days ago due to my sheer carelessness. The body and lens escaped damaged, only the rangefinder unit was affected. Is there anyway I can aligh the rangefinder myself? If not, how much would a repair of this scale cost? Thanks in advance.

vertical or horizontal? If V, simple job, u can DIY. If H, shiong liao. (I guess V out. H is hard to tell. am I rite?)

YOL

Both!

I've found instructions for both, but the screws in both cases doesn't seem to be budging, and I don't think it's very wise to force my way through eh?

Samuel

The screw dont move ? u mean when tighten ?

I suppose you're supposed to move the screw either way to adjust? The rangefinder arm screw doesn't want to budget and the one in the middle of the rangefinder windows turns only minutely, not enough to correct the error.

Samuel

What M is it? I had to bend my screwdriver to adjust the screw on the arm. If you want you can bring your M down to my place and we can try it with my tools.

I think Samuel use m2 , i adjust mine without much prob following the guide

Tried, and going to try one last time before I send it to the shop. Don't want an even more expensive bill...

Thanks for your help guys. :)

My advice is that don't DIY horizontal adjustment as it involves two degree-of-freedom. It's easy to DIY & have infinity alignment but the close range could be way out as a result.

estimate injury: cam.x ~$100 P&G - $150~$200. philip tay - ?, can try.

That sucks.. :(

Hmm, I might have to bite the bullet though...

:D Have 2 body then diff story right ? Since can compare ?

Samuel, after 1.2 hours sitting near windows to adjust my m2, here my guide for u :D

Vertical alignment then just open the small screw above the lens mount, inside is a small screw, that screw damn easy to move, so can adjust easily

Horizontal alignment :)

1- Find some screw driver, the type that the head can change ,take the head only . I found that sometimes u cant move the screw cause the screw driver head only touch part of the screw, thus damn hard to move, and actually this screw much stiffer than the vertical one.

hold the little head w ur 2 finger can already

2- check horizontal misalignment, find some straight line in infinitive range , turn the lens to infinitive, tell me which case is it , image 2 is the one u have to match with , 1 ,3 is where ur lens stop when put to infinitive.

3 - If ur lens stop at 1, mean the image have to move to the left a bit to match 2 , turn the screw counter clock-wise ( I hope i remember correctly ) Do the opposite for other case, sadly now i'm not sure counter clock wise or not. *** Note : May require some fingers strength, u can do it :D

4- I dont think it can be wrong when u can match the image at infinitive, it's whether go over or can't reach , if it's match, most likely will be ok .

5- test w other camera, find somewhere u can focus at 1m, then use dslr or other cam to focus there and check whether it's true that its 1m

6- Happy, jump and sing

7- please put the small screw back.

8 - SHoot a test roll , mine i test w a 90mm, all come out sharp, so i guess no prob.

* for fine tuning , look for somewhere far ,focus on a straight line so easier to check in case ur misalignment not so serious but a bit.

Thanks for your help. :)

I'll be trying your method soon!

Samuel

Important point is use the screw driver head only, cause most screw driver too long to poke in for the horizontal adjustment, hold the screw driver head w 2 finger make things a lot easier.
