Is there an available Leica lens price list for SG? It seems lens prices can differ by a couple of hundreds in different stores in SG...

Answer to your question is no.

hahah i was wondering about this too. seems like its a pretty taboo topic to be discussing leica prices in public.

but then again. why ah?!?!?!?!?! :(

don't think its taboo, maybe more popular/economical to buy 2nd hand lens....normally i based on B&H Photo (USA) to get a reference of the new lens list price.

Like Louis Armstrong says “If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know.” ...then again, I'm rambling at 3am :)

It boils down to a few things:

1. How much you value the lens.
2. Whether the lens has a fair price with regards to its qualities
3. And finally whether you can afford it.

You can probably haggle in these shops as well. So go ahead and see if you can get a better deal.

You go to the Leica showroom at Raffles Hotel, and you ask the executives there:
" Are the prices fixed?" ... the answer is like, " Our customers never ask for discounts".

i checked one item:
Leica Raffles: $460 for a magnifier, AlanPhoto quoted: $520 (".... fixed price, it's Leica, expensive item, I can't give you discount").
Leica Raffles: $180 for a battery, Gophes quoted: $200 ("best price").

For new items, there is a list of recommended retail prices. You can see it at places like Gope's or Cathay if you know them well.

Recently, I have found that for the popular items that have a waiting list, it is actually cheaper to buy it from the Raffles Leica Boutique.

Also in case you guys did not know, there is a new Leica shop being opened by Gope's at Tanglin Shopping Centre, don't know the exact date, but it is about a quarter of the size of the one in Raffles Hotel and decorated like all Leica shops/corners. Dark wood glass display cabinets etc.

best answer. if u have to ask for the prices, means u cant afford it. simple as that i guess for these kinds of luxury goods.

which is why i never ask for price, cos i know i cant afford it. haha.

actually that's not true.
Like all consumer's goods, there are the "Rich" consumers, the "Poorer Rich" consumers and the "Passionate but can't afford" consumers. The Rich photographers will usually buy whatever they want, the poorer Rich will want to buy whatever they want but looking for a "better" bargain (usually they can also afford the best too but would prefer to get them at a better bargain price) and the passionate photographers who really need the gears (for its quality, etc) but can't afford the RRP).

For Lecia, because they are perceived to be "expensive" items through marketing and high production/marketing costs, the market reacted as such. some retailers take advantage of this and do their additional markups. So I say, if you belong to the poorer rich group, do shop around, and you can get some great deals, like a almost new M9 for $6k here (I saw the ads when the view was still zero but was a bit suspicious then ... haha).

There is an extreme shortage of Leica lenses, hence shops can get away with selling at list or even slightly above list price. Just be glad you are not in Hong Kong where the markup for popular lenses is ALOT higher.

To be dutifully frank, at some point, bargaining is simply bad practice. When you deal with an item, it is assumed that the price given is a good price and the retailer isn't out to cheat. Having the bargain is an assumption of bad faith on both sides.

If it is a "perfect" world, then you are absolutely right. But different people have different cultural exposures and their own experiences in life, and as such, "bargaining" is part of our life. Even Warren Buffett bargains for the best deal, governments do that too, etc. If everybody is selling at the same prices, and everyone is buying the same prices, then life would be much simpler. There are just too many greedy businessmen around too!

When making a purchase, be it new or thru BnS, negotiating (not bargaining) for what you feel is a reasonable amount for the item should not be viewed as bad practice. Even rich people do it.... they may not ask for $ off, but extra warranty, freebies, etc all add up to the same thing.

if you guys feel that the community can benefit with a RF / Leica price guide, the mods can facilitate the setup of a thread in the price guide section - http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/forums/124-Price-Guides

but we'd ask for a CSer to volunteer to maintain the price guide. i know that some communities have found this practice useful, while others... well, let's just say that the milage may vary.

My personal thoughts...

Leica lenses are like art pieces, there is no rational price for Leica lenses, even for current production ones..... well, except the summarits. :)

Answer is simple mah.

List price for brand new is meaningless because most pieces have no stock and waiting queue can be more than a year.

For resale market, the varying conditions and varying supply make it impossible to have consistant prices.

Best gauge is look at ebay concluded prices and other forums. But even then, if u watch carefully you can detect not all concluded transactions are real.

Leica Store "secret policy" is the following:

Leica M / S Bodies max 3% discount.
Leica M / S Lenses ZERO Discount.

Leica M Assc 3% max discount.

Leica X 3-5% max Discount.

Leica Digitals - the "cheap" ones is 5% Discount.

Leica Binoculars....... Unknown.

So there you go folks..... you gotta ask though ;)
