It boils down to a few things:hahah i was wondering about this too. seems like its a pretty taboo topic to be discussing leica prices in public.
but then again. why ah?!?!?!?!?!![]()
" Are the prices fixed?" ... the answer is like, " Our customers never ask for discounts".
actually that's not true.best answer. if u have to ask for the prices, means u cant afford it. simple as that i guess for these kinds of luxury goods.
which is why i never ask for price, cos i know i cant afford it. haha.
To be dutifully frank, at some point, bargaining is simply bad practice. When you deal with an item, it is assumed that the price given is a good price and the retailer isn't out to cheat. Having the bargain is an assumption of bad faith on both sides.actually that's not true.
Like all consumer's goods, there are the "Rich" consumers, the "Poorer Rich" consumers and the "Passionate but can't afford" consumers. The Rich photographers will usually buy whatever they want, the poorer Rich will want to buy whatever they want but looking for a "better" bargain (usually they can also afford the best too but would prefer to get them at a better bargain price) and the passionate photographers who really need the gears (for its quality, etc) but can't afford the RRP).
For Lecia, because they are perceived to be "expensive" items through marketing and high production/marketing costs, the market reacted as such. some retailers take advantage of this and do their additional markups. So I say, if you belong to the poorer rich group, do shop around, and you can get some great deals, like a almost new M9 for $6k here (I saw the ads when the view was still zero but was a bit suspicious then ... haha).
If it is a "perfect" world, then you are absolutely right. But different people have different cultural exposures and their own experiences in life, and as such, "bargaining" is part of our life. Even Warren Buffett bargains for the best deal, governments do that too, etc. If everybody is selling at the same prices, and everyone is buying the same prices, then life would be much simpler. There are just too many greedy businessmen around too!To be dutifully frank, at some point, bargaining is simply bad practice. When you deal with an item, it is assumed that the price given is a good price and the retailer isn't out to cheat. Having the bargain is an assumption of bad faith on both sides.
You go to the Leica showroom at Raffles Hotel, and you ask the executives there:
" Are the prices fixed?" ... the answer is like, " Our customers never ask for discounts".
i checked one item:
Leica Raffles: $460 for a magnifier, AlanPhoto quoted: $520 (".... fixed price, it's Leica, expensive item, I can't give you discount").
Leica Raffles: $180 for a battery, Gophes quoted: $200 ("best price").
if you guys feel that the community can benefit with a RF / Leica price guide, the mods can facilitate the setup of a thread in the price guide section - http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/forums/124-Price-Guides
but we'd ask for a CSer to volunteer to maintain the price guide. i know that some communities have found this practice useful, while others... well, let's just say that the milage may vary.
