Leica MP and summilux lens

yeah you're right, i may not be suitable for RF photography. But i've always wanted to be a street shooting photojournalist.

So i'm gonna figure out rf photography by hook or by crook and get it right.

I don't think it can be THAT difficult. It's just a matter of getting used to it.

I shoot wide all the time on the 5dmark II, so thats why i'm wondering why i can't do the same for the leica.

I'm not going to do that ALL the time for street photography since there's no need to subject isolating shots all the time. But it would be nice to be able to do, if i DO have a shot in mind.

How then, am i going to get background isolating depth of field blurriness with the m7 in daylight if my max shutter speed is 1/1000


At least the M8 has 1/8000!

how am i supposed to shoot quickly if i take forever to focus. no shutter lag, but got hand lag

Bought at Contax 645 with 80mm f/2 lens already. Can't wait to start shooting film.

Why not stick with the Contax? The 645 is a SUPERB platform and MF has undeniable advantages over 35mm. Load it up with Velvia or Provia and be prepared for the ride of a lifetime.

I usually shoot a Pentax645 but had the opportunity to shoot the Contax for 3 rolls. The images that come out of that Planar 80 on Provia100 are unlike any I've ever seen, on any platform, for that matter.

You can turn off most of the bells and whistles if you like such as the autofocus, and shoot in manual mode.

Yeah got a Contax 645 with 80mm f/2 lens for $1400 US. Can't be as heavy as a 5D with the super heavy 85 f1/.2 right?


Can spare Contax batteries be bought in Singapore? Or must i buy online again?

The medium format rigs are pretty heavy. Similar to 1D weight for body alone. 5D is lighter (I have the classic).

Ah i see. So if i do my developing at Ruby or Fotohub, and do the scanning myself using a top grade scanner like Nikon 9000 or something, will i be able to get professional quality results?

Or do i have to do all the darkroom developing myself?

Because i've seen like really top notch scans by people that look like digital. haha

Do your own scanning. After being disappointed by various labs, I prefer the control I get using even an entry level $300 Canon flatbed scanner. MF film scans much better on a consumer flatbed due to large 'surface area' than 35mm.

Don't pictures still have to be lightly touched up in photoshop or something? Or do they just look amazing straight out of the darkroom?

Shoot slides if you want a challenge. What you see is what you get; there is no room for postprocessing or error. I like them. I shoot JPEG's like I shoot slides.

Or you could be slack and lazy like me and use hyperfocal distance, since I primarily shoot landscapes. Focus at hyperfocal and watch your DOF scale (yeah, the nice thing is that the old school lenses actually had good DOF scales!)

Buying film over in Japan is not going to cost cheaper. The yen is insanely high these days.

Infact, Ilford is cheaper over at Ruby. At Ruby, though selection is not as much as those in Japan, they have pretty much almost everything if you place order from them(Ruby).

The Fuji selection over there is huge. You can get professional, medium format and large format films that you can't find over here in Singapore. Polaroid film selection there is also pretty good. But prices, I won't say they are good. But what the hack... you probably can't find some of these items on this island at all. Yodobashi is one of the best places to find selection of film on this planet. Yodobashi stock is almost the same across all the branches. The Shinjuku & Akihabara shops should stock the same stuff for film.

If you have a huge shopping budget, you should go down and grab some professional films & slides. But don't bother with those that you can find in Ruby or Konota. So, do your home work before you go down so that you don't bang chest when you come back home. Shopping in Japan is not about cheap cheap cheap... you get quality stuff there where it's not easy to find outside the Nippon island. (*but with internet you get almost everything... but at a higher risk*)

I suggest you bring some spare cash and go shopping at Map Camera & Fujiya camera. These 2 places are THE place to visit if you do not have much time in Japan... it's EVERY photographer's pit stop in Tokyo. Swapping your credit cards is going to cost you 3% to 5% more. Cash is Discount over there.

damn it, time is running out for me and there's so much i don't know about film!

At least i know how to load my leica and contax 645 now.

Completely ditching my 5d mark II and lenses, and just going to film all the way in japan

Betriebsk is the designated name for "Demo" or "Store Unit". It is actually inscribed into the camera so you can't remove the word, which affects the resale value. Depending on the condition of the camera, US$988 is nevertheless a fantastic value for the M7 since the camera usually goes for S$3000-3400. If you intend to use it like a Leica is meant to be used, then I'd say go for it!

P.S: It's eBay afterall, so buyers beware...
