Leica DG Summilux 25mm f1.4 opinions

Like you said, size is the main consideration. The extra 10mm space can make or break a shot especially on the train. Sharpness is roughly the same and some peeps like the bokeh balls on the 25 1.4 better.

As a 20mm owner, I see no reason to change lenses. Wouldn't make me a better photographer

Great! Thank you for understanding me. Weren't you never caught in such a dilemma - 20 or 25? Or was the price difference not justified for you?

Different strokes for different folks. Different people have different tolerances to IQ, size, weight, and budget. Unless you find someone like-minded, maybe you can follow the advice. For me, 25 mm is the clear winner. I dun really like the bigger size, but I accept that in lieu of better IQ, colour and aperture. My 20 mm is never used now although it was on my camera all the time before I bought the 25 mm.

I get where you are coming from bro. It's a never ending debate till I have it and judge it myself. I shall blame the two manufacturers for making a such a close difference focal length! It's like killing each other; unhleathy!

It isn't my main camera so I can't justify the extra expense. That aside, since it is my "for fun" camera, no point investing so heavily in the glass. The 20mm 1.7 made me happy enough. Another keypoint to me is that with a 20mm, I can move closer (most of the time). However in a tight situation, I can't back through a wall :)

At the end of the day, pick what makes you happy. Not what you need. We Singaporeans have an unhealthy BBB syndrome :P

Its not. Having more choices does not mean sales suffer. There are people with both!

It's just marketing strategy and economics. Having two different lenses serving different price bands means you capture a wider market.

I just hope one of the two companies releases a 45/1.4 though. The fast 90/85mm focal length needs a 1.4 aperture. 1.8... Is close but not close enough. Maybe a fast 100/105mm will be good too.

im considering either 20 or 25. Have anyone who own both and think they have v diff benefits?

Or 20 is really good enough? Lol

Yes! Itchy fingers, or whatever it is, we always want to try something till we found the one that fulfils our expectations.

To "cure" it, I actually got the 12 f2 second hand instead. (I did my fair bit of research to sway me over lol) The satisfaction I get is that I have 2 different perspectives from the lenses and true enough it kinda replaced my 20 1.7 as a walkabout/ always mounted lens.

And my apologies for mixing up the manufacturers :P

With regards to the dream focal lengths and apertures, I'm telling you... It never ends. We always demand technology haha but at the end o the day, it is you the combination of lenses that makes you feel good and say "yeah, this are the ones for me."

Going back to the 25 1.4, I'm not able to justify my reasons of getting something $300-$400 more expensive than a lens that I am already happy with. I admit I'm quite intrigued by what others say about '3D, popping out effect' as well as the 1.4. But perhaps I'd rather get another one with different length at roughy similar price, which I did.

So to the bro who has the same doubts as me, really I suggest to go out and rent it for a day to feel the difference. This "feel" is something only you yourself can justify.

:)

I have tried both lenses now and I think the answer is pretty simple. If you tend to shoot more pictures of people with limited view of the background, get the 25mm else just get the 20mm.

Dear friends

I was at ms today to try out the lens. However I was surprise that this lens has loud focusing sound. I own the 14mm and was comparing btw these 2 lens. The 25mm does have this click click sound.

Even the sale was surprise and he offer me another piece to try out. Both have the sound.

I would like to check if yours have the sound during focusing. Thanks.

This is a known issue when using the lens on oly bodies. There is a thread on it somewhere in CS.

Hi esoeij

I tested using gf2 and gx1. Both also got sound.

Hmmm, I had this issue when I paired my copy with an epl3 but not with my gh2. Some CSers reported that the sound went away after awhile. The experience really varies I guess but more with oly bodies I think.

I have the 3 fast primes for m4/3, the 12mm f2, 25mm f1.4 and the 45mm f1.8 .

Among the 3, the 25mm f1.4 is my most favorite. There is something special with the photos taken with it. :)

I am tempted to purchase the D800 or "D700s (if any)", but I believe I will keep a m43 body + 25mm f1.4 as my every day carry + travel camera.

The extra $300-$400 will remove the barrel distortion you are seeing with the 20mm pancake lens.

Not enough to justify the costs for me. Then again, to each its own :)
